Coen looks to positives

A fine performance from Mayo hurlers against Derry in Owenbeg

Mayo manager JP Coen believes there were many positives to take from their narrow defeat to Derry in the Christy Ring Cup.

The Connacht side travelled to Owenbeg, being given little chance of coming away with a win, but only two points separated the sides at the final whistle.

And Coen is adamant that they can learn from the defeat as they plan to face the losers of London and Kildare in the next round.

"We knew coming up here that we weren't given much of a hope but our league campaign didn't reflect the team we had and I think there were glimpses of how good we are against Derry," Coen told the Western People.

"The lads were up for the game, they wanted to get a result and I couldn't give them enough praise. Everything we've asked since the league finished, they've done everything they can. We had some savage turnouts and we did a lot of good stuff at training and I think that showed."
