Gavin Duffy's much-anticipated senior debut for Mayo failed to materialise yesterday because of problems relating to his transfer papers.

The former Connacht and Ireland rugby star, who plays his club football with Salthill/Knocknacarra in Galway, was named to start in midfield alongside Barry Moran against IT Sligo in the FBD Connacht League in his home town of Ballina, but was withdrawn at the last minute with Alex Corduff replacing him.

Duffy, who played in the 1999 All-Ireland minor final defeat to Down, was called up to the squad last summer by former manager James Horan after his rugby career ended, but still has to make his competitive bow for the four-in-a-row Connacht champions.
