Mortimer bows out

Mayo's Trevor Mortimer
Trevor Mortimer has confirmed his intercounty retirement.

The 31-year old Shrule-Glencorrib clubman will be unavailable to James Horan's team due to work commitments in Kenya.

The versatile former Mayo captain has played no part in this year's national league campaign and informed the manager of his decision to retire during a recent two-week trip home.

Conor's older brother made his Mayo debut in 2000 and played in the 2004 All-Ireland final against Kerry. He was a substitute for the 2006 All-Ireland, also against the Kingdom, and won a league medal in 2001 (beating Galway in the decider).

Horan paid tribute to his former team-mate in today's Times: "Trevor was a great servant for Mayo football and we wish him well.

"We are fortunate that we have a number of good young players coming through but Trevor was a top-class player and he has left some big boots to fill."
