Moran brace sinks Knockmore

April 23, 2009
Ballaghaderreen 2-8 Knockmore 1-9 A rampant 2-3 from Ballaghaderreen full-forward Andy Moran proved the difference last Sunday as his side maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a win over Knockmore at St Joseph's Park. It was Andy Hanley who opened the scoring for the winners early on before Aidan Kilcoyne cancelled out and Stephen Sweeney put Knockmore in front, Barry Kelly notched the game level for the second time, but Sweeney's second put Knockmore back in front until Kelly's long ball found Moran on the edge of the square and the lethal attacker turned and put the ball to the net. Barry Solan and Peter Kelly added on points for the east Mayo side to extend the lead before Shane McHale closed the half out with a well struck point from 30 metres. Kilcoyne looked to set the tone for Knockmore with an early point in the second-half, but Moran's second goal looked to provide a major setback. However, Knockmore substitute Trevor Howley landed an early point upon his introduction and then backed up the effort with a brilliantly taken goal to pull his side right back into contention. Andy Hanley and James Ruddy swapped good points, but Howley and Kilcoyne's scores meant that there was just one-point in it late on, but, fittingly, Moran made sure that margin was two heading towards injury-time as Ballaghaderreen were made earn their win here.
