Johnny Magee admits he took pleasure from seeing Dublin hammer Mayo in the All-Ireland semi-final as it "put to bed" the theory that they were the one team that they always struggled against.

Having had several close calls against the Westeners in big games this decade, the Dubs left no-one in any doubt as to who is the better team when they turned on the style in the second half to run out 10-point winners.

“The last day, I was quietly delighted that they went and put the whole thing to bed about Mayo, do you know what I mean? I was delighted, that’s it, ‘See you later, good luck’. Put to bed," the former Dublin centre back told the Irish Daily Mirror at the launch of the annual Londis All-Ireland Club Sevens tournament which will be hosted by his club Kilmacud Crokes tomorrow.

“This thing about this great Mayo team... they’re a good side but they haven’t won their own province in how many years?

“Yes, there’s their character and their resilience and how they keep coming back. How many teams have put Dublin to the pin of their collar and they’ve worked it out and managed to get the win?

“At different stages, games have been in the melting pot and Dublin have always come out the other side of it. So look, history down the line will show that this generation, this Dublin team, will obviously be one of the best ever.

“The Mayo team, for me, had to put more silverware on the table. From their own province as well as All-Irelands. And they haven’t. History will only tell that story down the line."
