Newtown Blues are 60 minutes away from securing their Division 1 status for another season after defeating St Josephs in the promotion/relegation semi-final on Tuesday night.

The result means that the Joes will remain in Division 2 for 2018 while the Blues will face Hunterstown for the right to play in the top flight.

The Cluskey Park outfit had the advantage of the wind in the first half  but it was the Blues who opened the scoring through Ross Nally.

Conall Smyth and Alan McKenna put the Joes in front but two points from Ciaran Downey and another from Nally in response to a Conal O'Hanlon effort had the Blues leading by 0-4 to 0-3 at the break.

The second half was dominated by the Blues and with Robert Carr, Cormac Reynolds and Andy McDonnell contributing to the score they went 0-12 to 0-3 in front before Alan Quigley pointed a free for the Joes on 44 minutes.

The Drogheda side added a further five points with the Joes claimed a consolation goal from David Mernagh three minutes from time.
