Sadness at passing of Louth sports all-rounder Sonia Hoey

Former Dundalk soccer and Louth ladies football star Sonia Hoey has passed away after a long illness.

The talented sportswoman scored the winning goal for Dundalk in the 2005 Women’s FAI Cup final before going on to play ladies football for Louth.

In a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, Sonia’s LGFA club Dowdallshill said: “The club wishes to extend its deepest sympathy to the Hoey and McArdle families, on the passing of former Dowdallshill GF & AC Ladies player Sonia Hoey.

"Sonia was part of the Louth Junior FC winning team of 2012 and Intermediate 2013. She also represented the County, and as well as her Gaelic skills, she was also a noted soccer player, scoring Dundalk’s winning goal in their FAI Cup Final victory of 2005. Ar dheas dé go raibh a h-anam."

Sonia’s removal takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 10.40am, proceeding on foot to the Church of the Holy Redeemer, arriving for Funeral Mass at 11am. Burial will take place afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery.
