SFC: Early Carr goal sets Blues on their way

July 22, 2019

Celebration time for Newtown Blues after they retained the Louth SFC title following a 1-11 to 1-10 final victory over Naomh Mairtin at the Gaelic Grounds.

NEWTOWN BLUES 1-15

ST MOCHTAS 0-12

A goal from Robert Carr after just 20 seconds set Newtown Blues on their way to victory over St Mochtas at The Grove on Sunday afternoon.

The clash of the reigning Senior and Intermediate saw the Drogheda side suggest that they are still the team to beat in this year’s chase for the Joe Ward as they were in charge for most of the hour and deservedly claimed a six-point win.

They couldn’t have asked for a better start as Carr crashed the ball to the net in the opening attack and they added points from Ross Nally and Ciaran Downey before Declan Byrne got the first point for the Louth Village men. Byrne’s third point from a free cut the gap to three points at the end of the first quarter but the

Blues upped the pace and kicked six unanswered points to open up a nine-point gap. However, Byrne kicked two points before the break to reduce the deficit to 1-9 to 0-5 at half time.

The Mochtas fought hard in the second half to get back into the game but the experience of the Blues was evident as they managed to keep their opponents at arm’s length and they held out for an impressive win.

The Mochtas found it difficult to get space in front of the posts and it wasn’t until the 52 nd minute that Cormac Smyth scored their first point from play.
