Hunterstown Rovers got their Intermediate Championship campaign off to a winning start when a late point from substitute Dean Burns gave them a 1-14 to 0-16 win over St Fechins at the Gaelic Grounds.

It was a night to forget for the Termonfeckin side as they certainly didn’t have the rub of the green as with just three minutes played in the second half they had lost all three Louth players.

Bevan Duffy picked up a first half Black Card while Eoghan Duffy and Ronan Holcroft went off injured. To add to their woes, goalkeeper Niall McDonnell was sent off with ten minutes remaining.

Hunterstown took full advantage with a fine display that saw them come out on top in an entertaining encounter.

It was fairly nip and tuck in the first half with the both teams evenly matched as the Fechins went in with a slender 0-8 to 0-7 lead with Ryan Ward and Alan Landy among the scorers for the winners.

In the second half Fechins went 0-12 to 0-7 up in the first five minutes but despite losing Keith Brennan to a Black Card, Hunterstown fought back to within two points thanks to scores from Glen Mathews. Paul Carrie then scored the only goal from a penalty with ten minutes remaining.

Sean Kerrisk looked to have rescued a draw for the Fechins but Burns had the final say to give Rovers a vital win.

Mattock Rangers eased into the quarter-finals thanks to a 2-14 to 0-12 win over Nh Fionnbarra at Dowdallshill on Saturday evening.

The first half of this contest was a relatively even affair and once again it was David Reid who led the scoring for Mattock as the teams traded points. However, the difference between the teams was a Brendan Leacy goal as Mattock went in leading by 1-8 to 0-8.

The Finbarrs continued to battle in the second half but they were unable to make any real impression on the Collon men who sealed victory thanks to a goal from substitute Oisin McKenna. Scorers on the night for the Barrs included Oisin McGee, Padraig Butterly and Hugh Osborne.

The Finbarrs will now take on Cooley Kickhams in the final group game to decide who will join Mattock in the last eight.

A goal from Sean Marry ten minutes from time helped St Brides book their place in the last eight with a 1-11 to 0-13 win over Glen Emmets at The Grove on Sunday afternoon.

The first half was a very even affair and after Sean Marry’s opening score was cancelled out by James Butler, the teams shared the next six points.

The Brides then looked to be getting on top when they had successive scores from Marry (2) and Conaill Devin. However, the Tullyallen side finished the half with a flourish and scores from Butler (2) and Grufferty had the teams level at the break at seven points apiece.

The half-time break didn’t halt the Emmets momentum as made a flying start to the second half with Ronan Gruffery landing four points and Conor Grimes also on target to help their side lead by 0-12 to 0-9 after 45 minutes. Marry and Emmet Kirk replied for the Brides.

The game then turned when Marry scored the only goal of the game and late point from Kevin Hearty was enough to hold off the Emmets.

The game between Clan na Gael and Kilkerley Emmets was postponed due to a bereavement.
