IFC round-up: Woods to the fore again as Barrs book quarter-final place

July 16, 2018

Naomh Fionnbarra's William Woods.

Nh Fionnbarra booked their place in the quarter-final of the Louth Intermediate Championship when they proved too strong for a gallant Na Piarsaigh at Dunleer on Saturday evening.

William Woods turned in another eye-catching performance in front of the posts as he finished with a personal tally of 1-10 in the 3-16 to 1-7 win.

Woods grabbed his first goal of the game on ten minutes and from the restart Mairtin Murphy added a second to put his side 2-4 to no score in front. Na Piarsaigh rallied in the third quarter and a goal from Tommy Muckian got them off the mark, but points from Woods and Jack Butterly had the Barrs 2-9 to 1-2 ahead at the break.

The Dundalk men battled well in the third quarter with points from Mark Larkin and Robbie Murphy but the Finbarrs always illustrated their superiority with a scoring burst of 1-4 at the start of the final quarter with Butterly's goal helping to seal a comfortable win.

St Brides also secured a place in the last eight of the Intermediate Championship despite being held to a 0-10 apiece draw by Mattock Rangers thanks to a late Ronan Kilbane point at Ardee on Saturday evening.

The Collon side will be the happier of the two after this result as they fought back from four points and a man down in the second half to claim a share of the spoils.

The Brides made a bright start and with Aaron Hoey, Ciaran Deane and Kevin Hearty on target they led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break. Points from David and Adrian Reid kept Mattock in touch.

Points from Sean Marry and James Costelloe saw the Brides stretch the lead to four points but despite seeing Mattock reduced to 14 men they were able to hold out. Alan Caraher helped keep the Collon side in touch along with points from the Reids before Ronan Kilbane hit the equaliser in injury time.

Oliver Plunketts denied Cooley Kickhams the chance to seal their place in the knock- out stages when they came from behind to record a 0-15 to 0-10 win at Ardee on Saturday.

Led by the scoring threat of Brian White, Cooley had the better of the first half and went in at the break leading by 0-6 to 0-4 with Andy Morgan helping to keep the Drogheda men in touch.

The second half saw the Plunketts up the pace and they gradually took over with points from Morgan, Kevin Keogh and David Lambe to seal a five-point win. Others on target for the winners were Adam Brodigan, Trevor Walsh and Robbie Brodigan, while Fearghal Malone, Aoghain McGuinness and Gerry Malone were among the points for Cooley.

The Drogheda side can book their place in the last eight with victory over Glen Emmets in their final outing.

St Fechins made it through to the last eight when they defeated St Mochtas by 1-13 to 0-10 at Clan na Gael Park on Sunday evening.

The winners made a good start to the game with points from Ronan Holcroft but the Mochtas took command and with Jamie Farrell, Gerry Garland, Gareth O'Reilly and Andrew English among those on target they went into the break with a 0-7 to 0-4 lead.

However, the Fechins made a blistering start to the second half as Bevan Duffy fired in the equalising goal before points from Joseph Corrigan had his side in front.

The Mochtas kept in touch with three points from Declan Byrne but late scores from Holcroft (3) and Niall Devlin saw them run out deserving winners.
