Glyde Rangers got their Junior Championship campaign off to a winning start when they defeated Roche Emmets by 3-8 to 0-14 at Louth Village on Friday night.

The Tallanstown side made an excellent start when Niall Sharkey scored two goals inside the opening 20 minutes to see his side lead by 2-6 to 0-2. Glyde lost a bit of momentum after Trevor O'Brien went off injured and at the break Roche had reduced the gap to 2-6 to 0-4 with Barry O'Hare and Kevin Callaghan pointing for Roche.

The Faughart side got on top in the second half and got back to within two points as Callaghan and O'Hare led the revival. However, Glyde regained control when Aaron Devlin found the net after a Ciaran Sheridan shot came off the bar and the Tallanstown men held out for a vital win.

Westerns made it two wins from two in when they held off a strong challenge from the Wolfe Tones to record a 5-9 to 2-13 win at the Gaelic Grounds on Friday night.

The Reaghstown side made the brighter start and took an early lead thanks to a Tommy Durnin goal on six minutes. The Tones hit back with two goals from Chris Cudden but three-pointers from Ciaran Campbell and Durnin had the Westerns 3-6 to 2-7 in front at the break.

The Tones turned in an impressive second half display and it looked as if they were on course for victory as Niall Smith and Sam Kelly were on target. However, late goals from Durnin and Conor Kerry saw their side win out by five points.

Lannleire booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Junior Championship when they produced a fine scoring display to defeat Nh Malachi by 2-23 to 1-13 at Louth Village.

The Dunleer side kicked the first three points of the game only for the Mals to level through a Dylan Rooney goal on 15 minutes. Bob Murphy hit the net for Lannleire on 19 minutes to restore the lead and just before the break Pierce Hawkins added a second to increase the gap to 2-8 to 1-3 at half time.

Nh Malachi fought hard to get back into the game in the opening ten minutes of the second half but Lannleire began to find their range and took control of proceedings. Colin Murphy kicked nine second half points, while Killian Gregory, Briain McGuinness and Paul Callan were also on target in a game that saw them finish with nine different scorers.

Meanwhile, St Nicholas claimed their first point of the championship when a late goal from Paddy Murtagh secured a 1-7 apiece draw against Sean McDermotts in the Gaelic Grounds on Friday evening.

The Mountrush side appeared to be on course for victory despite losing Patrick Osborne to a first half red card as a goal from Kevin McMahon had them in charge in the second half. However, the Nicks refused to give in and Murtagh's late strike gave them a share of the spoils.

Kevin Walsh and Roy Kierans were also on target for the winners, while Daniel Commins, Cormac Walsh and Lorcan Myles were among the points for the McDermotts.

The remaining game in the Junior Championship saw Young Irelands book their place in the last eight with a 0-14 to 0-5 victory over John Mitchels on Sunday.

A feature of the game was a fine performance from Mitchels goalkeeper, David Anderson, who pulled off a number of fine saves over the hour.

The Young Irelands always had the edge in this encounter with the Mitchels points coming from Kevin Gallagher (3), Robert Coyle and James Clarke.
