Midlands leading Cheltenham Preview Night

February 15, 2017

Top UK Trainer Dan Skelton & racing legend Paul Carberry lined up for TEG Maryland Cheltenham Preview Night
For National Hunt Racing enthusiasts, these are some of the best weeks of the year -  the last few weeks before the iconic Cheltenham Racing Festival, which this year kicks off on March 14th. For most racing enthusiasts who love Cheltenham, much of the enjoyment is the build-up. Looking out for the clues, hints and tips and trying to come up with your 'Festival Banker' is half the fun.
Another hugely popular aspect of the build up to Cheltenham has been the Cheltenham Preview Nights. Maryland GAA club have organised hugely successful previews over the last few years which were all the better for the intimate atmosphere created in the unique surroundings of The Gap House, Moate. This year the event is sponsored by local firm TEG and will be held on Friday March 3rd at 9pm.
Once again Maryland have assembled a brilliant line-up of guests for their preview night. Up and coming UK trainer Dan Skelton will make the trip over for his first and only Irish Cheltenham Preview. Dan spent 9 years as assistant to champion trainer Paul Nicholls and had Cheltenham legends like Kauto Star, Big Buck's, Master Minded and Denman under his care. He branched out on his own 3 years ago and has had stellar success. This year he has trained over 70 winners, is closing in on the £1 million prizemoney mark and with over 150 horses under his care, has many live Cheltenham chances.
Recently retired jockey Paul Carberry makes the trip back to The Gap again after being a late call up last year. Viewed by many as the most naturally gifted jockey of his generation, Paul had his greatest day in the saddle when winning the English Grand National on Bobbyjo for his father Tommy.
Kevin Blake also returns to The Gap this year. The At The Races analyst, Irish Field contributor and Final Furlong podcaster is one of the most respected race readers in the game, and possesses a keen eye for value in the betting ring.
Another constant on the Maryland panel is Tony Mullins, brother of champion trainer Willie. Tony never disappoints, both with his forthright views on the chances of the family's horses and his sharp wit. Behind the humour lies a deep knowledge of the Irish National Hunt scene and he is never afraid to lay his cards on the table. Last year in The Gap, Tony caused some betting market moves and racing press coverage by boldly predicting that Vautour would run in the Ryanair in preference to the Gold Cup - a prediction that turned out to be spot on as Vautour was re-routed to the race and duly romped home. His nap at the preview for the last three years have all came up trumps - can he make it a four timer this year!
MC on the night will be affable At The Races presenter and betting expert Gary O'Brien, who will give his own knowledgeable opinions as well as pressing the panel for real insights.
Entry is €10 payable on the door. A draw with some terrific prizes, including much sought after U2 tickets, will take place on the night. For racing and non-racing fans this promises to be a night not to be missed.
