Dromard club notes

August 15, 2016

Senior Football Championship Round 2: Dromard 1-10 Abbeylara 1-15. Dromard took on Abbeylara in Emmet Park on Sunday evening (14th August) in the final game in the group stages of this year's championship. With both teams having already qualified for the quarter finals, Abbeylara lead from start to finish in this contest and claimed a deserved win on a perfect evening for football. Dromard were slow to start and found scores difficult to come by in the opening half with a number of goal changes going awry. By half time, a much sharper Abbeylara team lead by 9 points to 2. Dromard improved on the resumption with Francis McGee, Emmet Masterson and Peter Reynolds all kicking good points from play. Abbeylara responded with a goal to extend their lead once again. However, Dromard finished strongly and three late points along with a Cian Mimnagh goal left five points between the teams at the final whistle. Dromard now await the conclusion of the group stages this weekend when the quarter final draw will take place. Dromard Ladies Club Notes

Fixtures and Results: Just two panels in action this week and both with important semi finals to hopefully win. First up on Monday night was the U/12 Summer League Semi against Ardagh and after a closely contested match, Dromard progressed to the Final against Carrickedmond in Killoe. Then on Friday our Senior Panel looked to emulate their little sisters against Killashee. They too were victorious on the night albeit in a slightly more comfortable match and thus progress to the Longford Junior Final in Pearse Park on Sat September 10th.They will meet Mullinalaghta who had a terrific win over Longford Slashers. So good people of Dromard get ready with your signs, flags and colours to roar on your team.Either way the result means the Junior Championship is returning to North Longford.

Match Reports: U/12 Summer League Semi-Final: On Monday last our U12 team played St. Brigids, Ardagh in the Summer League A semi-final and what a game it was! Missing a couple of players on holiday we made the trip over to Ardagh and faced the team we had beaten by 1 point previously in the same competition. We got off to a good start with an early point from Siobhan Murphy but St. Brigids responded with a goal which dropped under the bar from a free kick. It was Leah Duffy who responded with a great goal followed by a Kate McEntire pointed free and Orla Magauren point from play to leave us trailing by a solitary point at the break on a scoreline of 1-3 to 2-1.

It was one of those days when points are hard to get and it would be goals that would make the difference and we started the second half with a brace of goals from full forward Siobhan Murphy. Down the other end of the pitch the backs were holding steady and St. Brigids were finding it difficult break through the defence.  On the couple of occasions that they did get through keeper Louise Tierney pulled off some fantastic saves. They added 1-2 to their scoreline to bring it back on level terms but we weren't finished yet. We finished strong with a point from Elena O'Reilly and a goal from Brianna Murphy while elsewhere on the pitch Kate O'Connor made the move from wing back to full back where she saved a goal on the line at a crucial time. St. Brigids never gave up and the final whistle was a welcome sound. Final score Dromard 4-4 St. Brigids 3-4.

The Dromard girls never let up and the effort from goal keeper, to full forward was fantastic. Midfielders Orla Magauren and Avril Cosgrove covered every inch of the pitch. The backs were determined and disciplined in their tackling and the forwards were always out in front.

Team: Louise Tierney, Kate O'Connor, Tamara Cosgrove, Aisling Farrell, Brianna Murphy (1-0), Rhiannagh Lennon, Orla Magauren (0-1), Avril Cosgrove, Alyssa McErlean, Kate McEntire (0-1f), Elena O'Reilly (0-1), Leah Duffy (1-0), Siobhan Murphy (2-1), Paige McLoughlin and Naoise Hourican.

Thanks to St. Brigids for a great sporting game. We now look forward to playing Carrickedmond on Monday next in the u12 A Summer League Final.

Junior Championship Semi-Final v Killashee: Last time these two teams met Killashee got off to a flying start and had three points scored before Dromard had gotten a hand on the ball. There was a determination in this Dromard team that this time they were not going to be so accomodating, and straight from the throw in they were on the front foot, and had a goal and five points in the locker before Killashee were able to raise a white flag. This set the pattern for the night and Dromard had established a comfortable lead at halfway. To their credit Killashee never gave up the fight and went on to score twice as many points in the second period as Dromard emptied their bench. Final score Dromard 8-15 Killashee 0-6. So mission accomplished with everybody playing their part in a fine team effort.Team and Scorers :Michelle Kilkenny,Laura Bleakley,Niamh Cooke,Michelle Masterson,Michelle McManus,Shauna O'Reilly,Doireann Mimnagh,Sarah Reynolds (2-1),Mairead Reynolds (0-1),Cait Murphy,Laura McManus,Donna Masterson,Helen Conefrey (1-2),Becky Maguire (3-3),Laura Martin (Capt) (1-6),Chloe Connell (1-1),Aine Smith (0-1),Andrea Farrell,Amy McLoughlin,Roisin Kiernan,Aoife Grimes,Aideen Mimnagh.

Ballinamuck Fair Day: Dromard Ladies will have a stall at this annual event so please support us.It is being ran by the Senior girls and is guaranteed to put some smiles on faces.

Birthdays: Two celebrations this week and certainly celebrated in style. Sean McNerney, Manager of our Senior Panel and recipient of the best present we could give him, a place in the Junior Final. Also Becky Maguire turning 21 this week and whose contribution of 3-3 against Killashee helped to get us there. Happy Birthday to you both from all in our club.
