Longford manager Denis Connerton is content by the way their season turned out, but stressed that they had to push on next year.

It is almost a certainty that the Longford man will remain at the helm of his native county for another year at least.

Connerton guided the Midlanders to two massive wins in the qualifiers over Down and Monaghan, both of which came away from home before they eventually were beaten by Cork.

Survival in the league was preceded by an appearance in the O'Byrne Cup final and Connerton admitted to the Longford Leader that progress has been made.

"It has been great in many aspects; getting to the O'Byrne Cup final in January was lovely. Retaining our position in Division 3 of the National League was huge for us and that was one of our main targets," said Connerton.

"The Leinster championship just didn't happen for us unfortunately and then we had the qualifiers. We are after playing 230 minutes against Division 1 opposition and it took them 210 minutes to break us down which is hard going."

He added: "It won't be easy. Division 3 is very competitive. What everybody would love is for us to build on this. Sometimes it isn't that simple. Hopefully all those young men will stick at it."
