Dromard Club Notes

August 10, 2015

Lotto draw for 4th August: The numbers drawn were: 10, 13, 16, 28. There were no jackpot winners. The €20 draw winners were: Felix Gormley, Rosario Rabbitt, John McNaboe and Thomas Gilligan. The sellers' prize was won by Geraldine Bleakley. Next week's jackpot now stands at €7,600.

U16 Championship: We had two outings recently in the u16 B championship. On Thursday last we suffered a heavy defeat to a strong Clonguish Og team who will surely go far this year. This game was a poor reflection on our season to date as we had to field without three of our starting players and lost two of our most influential players with 15 minutes on the clock starting; playing the remainder of the game with only 12 players.  However we regrouped and put in a strong, workmanlike performance on Saturday morning last to defeat a brave Western Gaels team. Joint captain Dylan McCormack was star of the show scoring a hat-trick. Team on duty: M. Courtney, D. O'Toole, E. Howe, M. McKenna, B. O'Connor, M. McStay, D. McCormack, J. McGreevy, C. Keenan, L. McEntire, R. Crowe, C. Cassidy, R. Bleakley. A special word of thanks goes to Peter Dillon for sponsoring the stylish new jerseys for the amalgamation. Training continues on Thursday evening.

Senior Championship: Dromard 1-09 Killoe 0-11. The senior team overcame Killoe in the final game of the group stages of the championship played at Monaduff on Sunday last (9th August). Dromard started the game brightly and opened up a three point lead after 15 minutes. A well taken goal by Ross McNerney with 22 minutes gone saw Dromard ahead at halftime by 1-7 to 0-6. In an entertaining and tightly contested second half, Killoe fought back strongly to draw level as Dromard struggled to add to their half-time scoring tally. In an exciting finish, the win was secured by a Francis McGee point from play. Dromard now face another major challenge as we were drawn to play Longford Slashers in the quarter final on Saturday 22nd August at 7.15pm in Pearse Park. Team versus Killoe: Gavin McNerney, David Pettit, Niall Vance, Paul McGee, Emmet Masterson, Ross McNerney, Kevin Donohoe, Diarmuid Masterson, Ronan McEntire, Bernard Sheridan, Declan Mimnagh, James Martin, Cian Mimnagh, Francis McGee, Peter Reynolds.Subs: Damien Sheridan, Gary Maguire.
Junior Championship: Earlier on Sunday, our junior panel secured their first win in the competition with victory over Ardagh at Keenan Park. Dromard started the game slowly and struggled to convert possession into scores despite creating numerous chances. A fisted goal by Peter Mimnagh following good work by Gary Maguire got Dromard off the mark in the 14th minute. Further goals by Sean McNerney and Gary Maguire saw Dromard extend their lead before half time. In the second half, Dromard established a good foothold around the middle of the field and put together some good passages of football leading to further scores from Brian McCormack, John McNaboe and substitute Peter Cosgrove, who made a welcome return to the Dromard colours. Dromard now play Rathcline on Sunday next in Pairc na nGael at 12 noon in an important fixture to determine progression in the championship. The Dromard lineout versus Ardagh was as follows: Oisin Hourican, Ronan Smith, Cathal Conefrey, James Conefrey, Brendan McLoughlin, Martin McGee, Alan McLoughlin, Conor Duffy, Fergal Berry, Peadar Kiernan, Brian McCormack , Sean McNerney, John McNaboe, Peter Mimnagh, Gary Maguire. Subs: Neill Cosgrave, Peter Cosgrove, Thomas Conefrey, Killian Hourican, Niall McManus.
Minor Championship: St Francis/St Vincent's (the Saints) played a very fancied Wolf Tones/Clonbroney in the Minor Championship on August 4th. In the league game earlier in the year the Saints were well beaten and missing four of their regular starting team, they needed to put in a big performance to stay in the game. Oisin Hourican in goals kept a clean sheet with some wonderful saves and his pin point kickouts were excellent. The backline of David Kalina and Leon McKeown were solid in defence, with Leon putting in some top class tackles and marching his line. Kevin Whitney, Tom McGee and Cathal Howe played well on the half back line. Aaron McGee and Mark Hughes at midfield were up against a tall paring from Wolf tones, but Aaron and Mark won a lot of ball in the first half and setup a few good attacks. Erik Stanku, dropping back from the half forward line to support the half backs had an excellent game. Peader Kiernan and Martin McStay worked tirelessly and set up attack after attach. Up front Paul Donnelly and Brian McGee caused a lot of problems for Wolf Tones/Clonbroney. The Saints held Wolf Tones/Clonbroney to a half time score of 0-6 to -02, but a lot of chances had been squandered upfront. At the start of the second half, Aaron McGee won an excellent ball at mid-field and ran past a number of defenders to stick the ball in the back of the net. This was the closest the saints got to pulling off a shock win, but they will be happy with their all-around performance. The will now play the Minor Championship Shield Semi-Final in a few weeks' time and hopefully they will have a full hand to play with.
