Pearse Park rebuild to cost millions

Longford GAA officials are coming to terms with the news that part of Glennon Brothers Pearse Park needs to be demolished and rebuilt.

An engineer's report has found that the main stand has been damaged by structural subsidence. The extent of the subsidence is far worse than expected and leaves Longford with little option but to tear down the stand and build from scratch.

"I wouldn't say we're in shock because it's something that's been discussed as an ongoing problem at executive and county board meetings for the last 12 or 14 months," county board secretary Peter O'Reilly is quoted in the Irish Daily Star.

"But when the final report landed and we saw exactly what was in it, it did stop you in your tracks because it's such a recent build."

O'Reilly couldn't confirm how much the demolition/rebuild works will cost.

"I could say to you it will cost €1 million or I could say it will cost €5 million, who knows it may fall somewhere in between."

The subsidence forced Longford to play their ill-fated All-Ireland qualifier against Kildare in Mullingar last month.
