Last orders for Slashers bar

October 16, 2014

No more pints pulled at the Slashers bar.

One of the oldest bars attached to a GAA club has closed its doors.

The bar in Longford Slashers' club complex has pulled down its shutters for a final time after 34 years in business. Over the past three decades, it hosted club events, discos, music and theatre performances, weddings and other functions.

"The bar is gone," Slashers GAA Complex committee member John Murphy confirmed to the Longford Leader website.

"It was a loss-making operation and we can't afford to lose money on any enterprise. We were not getting a return for the amount of effort involved in running a bar.

"It was taking too much of our time to run, and it was taking the attention away from our main activities."

He added: "The space will still be used for club events, but alcohol won't be served."
