Problems mount for Longford

Longford's Donal McElligott

Longford’s preparations for the Leinster SFC have suffered a number of setbacks in recent weeks.

The news that forward Donal McElligott will be suspended for the provincial quarterfinal clash against either Kildare or Wicklow on Sunday, May 26th has been added to by the fact Abbeylara’s Conor Berry has left the squad.

Berry is believed to have been struggling to regain full fitness from an injury sustained in last year’s county final and has opted to remove himself from the panel for the rest of the year.

Longford manager Padraic Davis already has to plan without Darren Gallagher (travelling to the States for the summer), Dessie Reynolds (exams), Rian Brady (injured) and Robbie Smyth (left the squad).

Without so many key players, it could well be a difficult campaign for the Midlanders, but their absence does open a door of opportunity for other players to shine.
