Patrickswell GAA notes

June 19, 2017

JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers won the City League Championship after an exciting tussle against Ballybrown at Childers Road.  The 'Well made a great start when Aaron Carmody hit the net in the early stages of the first half.  After fifteen minutes, Patrickswell were 1-4 to 0-2 ahead.  Ballybrown ramped up the pressure and were rewarded with four consecutive points.  At the interval, Patrickswell led their parish neighbours by just 1-4 to 0-6.

The second half was a tight battle for fifteen minutes.  Cillian O'Reilly (0-1) and Peter Harty (0-2) managed to keep Patrickswell ahead at 1-7 to 0-9.  In the middle of the second half, Patrickswell enjoyed a period of dominance and opened a four-point lead with fresh scores from Peter Harty, Cillian O'Reilly and Kelvin Lynch.  There was ten minutes remaining and the 'Well were 1-10 to 0-9 ahead.  Ballybrown knew that they required a goal and they pushed hard to get it.  Gary Murphy produced a sparkling save to deny a certain goal as Ballybrown were kept at bay.  They managed a solitary point and Keith Dundon collected the City League trophy after a 1-10 to 0-10 win.

The players had 48 hours' rest before facing Kilmallock in the County League semi-final.  Patrickswell kept in touch during the first half and were in contention at 0-7 to 0-6 behind at the break.  At one stage of the second half, the 'Well equalised at 0-8 apiece, but fatigue began to set in.  Kilmallock increased their tempo and rattled Patrickswell with a goal to lead by 1-11 to 0-9.  The Balbec closed out the game in a ruthless manner and knocked out Damien Gillane's men by 1-17 to 0-11.  Hard luck to the players for losing the County semi-final, but congratulations for scooping the City title.
