Senior Football Championship - Should have won it, could have lost it!
Rathkeale were back in action in the Senior Football Championship last Friday evening, hoping to bounce from their mediocre performance against Pallasgreen the previous week. Fr Caseys provided the opposition and with a win under their belts already, were strong favorites to overcome the Rathkeale outfit. The game was played in Newcastlewest with Jason Mullins of St Kierans officiating the contest. Rathkeale were playing with the aid of a slight breeze in the first half however it was Fr Caseys who made the brighter start and fired over two points within the opening 4 minutes. Rathkeale responded through a well worked point from Keith Harnett however Fr Caseys fired their third point and Adrian Enright's second. Fr Caseys scored again a minute later through Maurice Gleeson and with only 8 minutes on the clock the signs were ominous for Rathkeale.
Eoghan O'Connor opened his scoring account on the 10th minute, only for this to be cancelled out with Adrian Enright pointing twice for Caseys. With Rathkeale finally discovering their running game, Eoghan O'Connor had a gilt-edge chance saved when side footing to his left after a great run through Mikey Morrissey. O'Connor made amends on the 19th minutes with his second point only for Fr Caseys to respond again through a point of their own. Rathkeale enjoyed the remaining 7 minutes of the half and were now the dominant side with Harnett scoring his second point after good work from Pat Sheahan and O'Connor. Sean Sheahan tagged on another on the 26th minute before O'Connor scored the last score of the half, leaving the score 0-07 to 0-06 in Fr Caseys favour.
Rathkeale began the second half with the same dominance, however poor shooting from O'Connor and Kevin Shanahan would go on to cost Rathkeale. O'Connor did finally score on the 37minute from a free, with Darren Jones, who was on leave from a family wedding, went onto score Rathkeale's 8 point of the night. O'Connor pointed again from a free and Rathkeale were well on top at this stage of the game. Adrian Enright pulled a point back for Fr Caseys and then came the turning point in the game.
Fr Caseys' David Ward was dismissed on the 42nd minute for a second bookable offence for a tackle that you would witness in Thomond Park. O'Connor fired another point for Rathkeale however this was the end of their purple patch and it was Fr Caseys who galvanised themselves, now playing with 14 men. Substitute, Ronan Sweeney, hit two quick points for Fr Caseys before Adrian Enright hit a third in quick succession. Rathkeale responded well with points through Shanahan and O'Donnell to give the Deel outfit a point advantage with 7 minutes remaining. Could Rathkeale push on from this, afraid not and once again Fr Caseys stormed back in an enthralling encounter that ebbed and flowed. Fr Caseys hit three points in the final three minutes of normal time and you would be forgiven to think that the opportunity was lost for Rathkeale. But full credit to Rathkeale, they battled back and continued to run at the Fr Caseys defence and Eoghan O'Connor kicked two frees in the 2nd and 4th minutes of stoppage time to earn a well-deserved draw for Rathkeale. Final score, Rathkeale 0-14, Fr Caseys 0-14. Rathkeale will be disappointed not to have won the match however will take great heart from taking a point from the fixture and will be very pleased with a spirited team performance. Well done to all involved, it was great to see the fight back from the team. The unwelcome break will now kick in and it will the end of July before the Championship resumes with a tasty encounter against Newcastlewest, if we play with the same intensity as Friday we won't be a million miles off! This leaves Rathkeale on one point with all the teams closely bunched without a runaway leader, still all to play for!
Team: Johnny Mooney, Shane Hourigan, Sean O'Shea, Garry Enright, Patrick Sheahan, Paul White, Darren Jones, Trevor Nolan, Kevin Shanahan, Mikey Morrissey, Keith Harnett, Sean Sheahan, Damien Quaid, Eoghan O'Connor, Eoin O'Donnell

Club Membership 2016
Club membership for the 2016 season is now due. Rates for the upcoming season are as follows: Adult €50, Under-18 €20 and a family rate of €70. The rate for non-playing adult members will remain at €30. This represents good value in comparison to membership costs in other clubs across the county. All players must pay their membership prior to taking part in any games or training. This will be strictly enforced this year so make sure you contact Philip O'Donnell, who is the club registrar again for 2016, before training commences. We are taking this matter very serious this year and you simply won't play if you haven't paid, players are also going to ensure that their fellow players have paid so no excuses.
