Minor County Semi-Final
Fr. Caseys 1-09 Rathkeale 0-10

Fr. Caseys Minor Footballers travelled to Mick Neville Park last Thursday evening knowing they faced a daunting encounter with Rathkeale in order to reach the County Final and retain their crown. Winning the throw-in Rathkeale launched the first attack but they failed to convert. A massive free kick from Thomas Sexton from nearly 40 yards opened the scoring and Thomas raised the white flag for a second time within a minute combining very well with Pa O'Connor to cut through the defence and dissect the posts. After a brilliant start Fr. Caseys then were put on the back foot for the next 10 minutes by a very lively Rathkeale outfit that scored 5 points without reply to take a 3 point lead. The margin could have been greater only for the crossbar denying them a goal on 15 minutes. Fr. Caseys badly needed a score and that eventually came thanks to Michael Keane from a 20 yard free kick. With just over 5 minutes to the break Ronan Sweeney won a vital ball from his marker and setup Thomas Sexton who headed straight for goal and rattled the back of the net. Fr. Caseys now lead by a single point but Rathkeale leveled from a placed ball before Michael Keane and Pa O'Connor added two points late in the half to give the fealesiders a two point advantage at the break. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 1-05, Rathkeale 0-06.

There was little doubt we were in for another tense 30 minutes with very little to separate both sides. The tight marking coupled with slippery conditions mean this was never going to be a pretty game instead the coveted place in the county final would go to the team that wanted it the most. An early Rathkeale point deduced the deficit before Pa O'Connor kicked his second point of the night. Three unanswered points from Rathkeale put them in front with 15 minutes remaining and momentum looked on their side. Fr. Caseys would have to dig deep to pull this one out of the fire and that's exactly what they did. Ronan Sweeney, Ronan Cross and Daniel Lyons shored up the defense while the three most prominent scorers all season answer the call when questioned and provided the vital scores. Firstly Michael Keane drew the sides level from a placed ball before the lively Pa O'Connor recovered well from a slip to guide the ball over the bar from close range. A goal may have been on after great work by Thomas Sexton but Fr. Caseys were content to regain the lead. Then as the game approached full time Thomas Sexton stepped up to kick another wonderful points and give Fr. Caseys a vital 2 point lead. Rathkeale threw everything into attack in injury time but Fr. Caseys held on for their toughest victory all year. At times it wasn't pretty, there is definitely some improvement to be made in the coming fortnight but credit where credit is due, this team rose to the challenge from a very good Rathkeale side and now lie 60 minutes away from retaining the county title. Well done to all involved and we now look forward to Sunday October 18th when they take on Newcastle West in the County Final. The final score was Fr. Caseys 1-09, Rathkeale 0-10.
