Limerick Camogie Notes 18/8
ALL-IRELAND U15 DEVELOPMENT BLITZ

Limerick's U15 development team took part in the All-Ireland Blitz last Saturday in Kilkenny. The girls performed very well reaching the semi-final losing narrowly to Cork after extra-time.

This blitz was the culmination of the summer blitz programme and on the back of some fine performances Limerick went in a confident mood that they could perform well but as the day unfolded with every game, their performances grew better and better surpassing their expectations.

The day began with a tough outing against Galway. After a good start with points from Orla Lenihan and Karen Cunningham, Galway fought back to level the game at 3 a piece at the break. The second half was an even tighter affair; Galway went ahead before a Rosin Ambrose effort ensured the game finished honours even 0-4 to 0-4.

Next Limerick beat a hugely fancied Dublin side 0-4 to 0-0 in what was without doubt their best performance of the year. The aggression and effort shown was brilliant and from the first minute they gave Dublin no space. Orla Lenihan and Karen Cunningham got the scores to put Limerick ahead but the Game was really being won in defence, lead by Captain Kate Ambrose and Ellen Murphy. Some strong counter-attacking play in the second half resulted in another score for Orla Lenihan and a great effort by Edel Cunningham from wide to seal the game.

In the final group game Limerick beat Tipperary by 2-7 to 1-2 to top the group and qualify for the semi-final. The defining moment of the game came in a 2 minute spell, when full-forward Edel Cunningham rattled the back of the net on two occasions. Tipperary showed their resiliance when they got 1-2 in quick succession however Limerick shown their character to add further scores to ensure they did enough to top the group outright.

In a frantically paced semi-final extra-time was needed to separate the teams and unfortunately it was Cork who progressed by 0-8 to 0-4. Limerick opened up an early lead but Cork clawed it back to level at half-time. The second half was all about toughness with each side only getting a single score.

Extra-time was tense but Cork showed a little more experience to pull ahead. The effort that was shown by the Limerick side in the last quarter was immense it took a great save from the Cork goalkeeper to prevent a certain goal and Cork held on to advance.

This group of players, ably managed by Brian Leahy and his team, have been together for the past few months and they have shown a great deal of development, as they have gradually got better with time. However it was their effort and commitment that really shone through on Saturday. They are a real credit to their clubs and Limerick Camogie and they will do great things in the future.
