Junior Hurling

West Junior A Hurling Championship Round 2
Askeaton 2-6 Dromcollogher/Broadford 0-11
Knockaderry Saturday 18 July

We picked up our first points of the Championship in a very wet and windy Knockaderry. The conditions made scoring difficult for both sides and it was difficult to play the fluid running Hurling we usually aim for. The passion in the dressing room was intense as Rocky and Mark motivated the team in a pivotal match for the year. Many of the lads were disappointed to be left out of the starting team but the competition to get on the field in anyway is at its greatest in years.
Our lads found it difficult to score in the first 10 minutes as the conditions led to many wides. Dromcollogher/Broadford found it easier and gained a 2 point lead in the first 4 minutes. Willie O'Meara pointed from a free which David Holland won in the 12th minute and a minute later James pointed from their puck-out to even the scores. We extended our lead in the middle 10 minutes of the half. Our backline were creating lots of chances for our forwards on the counter attack with Eoin Cuddihy making some excellent clearances. Willie O'Meara gave us the lead for the first time in the 16th minute. Shane Gallagher pointed excellently after Eoin won the ball in our defence and passed to Declan in midfield. A minute later Conor Ranahan pulled off an excellent save with Drom only getting a point.
From the puck-out it was worked to Garry whose shot from distance rebounded off the upright and Matthew got an excellent goal as he beat his man to the ball on the right edge of the square to give us a 4 point lead with 10 minutes left in the half. We were unable to achieve anymore scores in the half but limited Drom to only 2 more pointed frees. The match was extremely physical with the referee awarding 3 yellow cards in the first half. We led 1-4 to 0-5 at half time and the team was left unchanged.

Drom had a strong wind behind their backs in the second half and once again were the better starters as they levelled the scores within 3 minutes and had a 1 point lead a minute later. 10 minutes into the Half the Drom/Broadford 7 received a second Yellow card as Garry's Hurley was thrown from the field. Conor Enright came on for Pakie Moran and our backs only allowed 2 points from play in the second half with Dervan and Rob commanding the lads. Drom had a 2 point lead with 10 minutes left Maurice Somers was brought into the forwards for Conor Barry and with 8 minutes left Shane Gallagher scored a vital goal. Garry got his second assist as his puck dropped in towards Shane on the edge of the Drom square and with a small flick we had regained a one point lead. Willie O'Meara pointed again with 6 minutes left after a Drom free. 2 minutes later Garry got his first and our last point of the night as Rob picked out James in midfield. Sean Whelan came on for Garry with minutes left on the clock.

The last minutes were extremely tense as we looked to maintain our lead. Drom claimed back 2 points from frees but were unable to level the score with a free on the right side 45 yards out. The lads gave everything to block, hook and dive in front of any shot that would give Drom a point. The dedication shown by all of the lads was immense as the match finished with us victorious by the narrowest of margins 2-6 to 0-11.

With one more game in the group stages against table toppers Tournafulla ahead we face our toughest opponents yet but our lads will continue with this momentum through to this match and hopefully to the knockout stages.
A special thanks must be said to all the supporters who travelled in numbers on a terrible evening to Knockaderry and the atmosphere was fantastic. The work put in by all of the lads and management throughout the year is finally paying off with the fitness and skill shown by the team unmatched by Drom.

Bord Na Nog
Last Saturday morning our Under 10 hurlers travelled by bus to take part in the a very well organised Munster  hurling Blitz in Thurles. The games took place in Dr Morris Park, Tipperary's centre of Excellence located behind Semple Stadium. The competition was 9 a side with 3 subs and we ended up fielding  two teams ,the intention of the day was to give our under 10's a chance to play against different teams from all over Munster .The competition didnt have a winner with the emphasis on participation for all. Team 1 had their opening game playing Whitegate from Clare losing narrowly, the second game saw us defeat Arravale Rovers from Tipperary and in the final game we drew with Eire Og from Cork.

Team 2 drew the short straw in a very competitive group with De La Salle from Waterford, Sixmilebridge & Kilmallock proving tough opposition . Our players gained great experience on the day and will stand to players in the future, and will give them great experience for the upcoming Credit Union tournament. The team had a bite to eat in Thurles after the tournament and had a great sing song on the way home rounding off a very enjoyable day.  Thank you to the parents who travelled and helped us on the day and our appointed referee Cian O'Connell.
