Limerick's Senior season ends with loss

Limerick 0-12 (0-7) Galway 4-16 (3-8)

Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship

Sat 18th July at 3.45pm in Athenry

Limerick first season back at Senior level came to a disappointing end with a 4-16 to 0-12 loss to an excellent Galway side in Athenry on Saturday. The game may have been a dead rubber as far as qualification for the knock-out stages was concerned but in front of their home fans the Tribeswomen put on a display that showed their intent and ability to win back the O'Duffy Cup.

Limerick started well and got on the scoreboard in the second minute with a point from Niamh Mulcahy after a well-worked move. However Limerick struggled to cope with the running of the Galway forwards and midfield players, with Niamh Kilkenny excellent throughout. When a 6th minute Fionola Keeley goal was followed just before the quarter hour mark by a brace from Ailish O'Reilly and Aoife Donohue Limerick trailed by 3-5 to 0-3 and were left with a mountain to climb.

Limerick rallied before and after the break and were closing the gap with Caoimhe Costelloe and Rebecca Delee sharing the scoring with Niamh Mulcahy. However a fourth Galway goal 10 minutes in killed the game as a contest. Limerick showed great character and never stopped fighting but the gap was too great.

Limerick can be pleased with their performances in the championship in their first year back at the top grade. To qualify out of this very tough group Limerick needed to win against Offaly and one of the "big three" who between them accounted for the last 11 All-Ireland titles. That they achieved the first part of that equation and came close to both Cork and Wexford all in their first season back at the grade augurs well for the future of Limerick Camogie.
