County Senior Football LeagueFr. Caseys 2-08 Monaleen 1-07

Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers hosted Monaleen last Wednesday evening in round 5 of the county league. Having suffered defeat to Na Piarsaigh in their last championship encounter Fr. Caseys were eager to return to winning ways but know they would face a tough test against an impressive Monaleen side.

Monaleen started the brightest and registered 1-01 inside the opened 10 minutes to build up an early lead. Fr. Caseys eventually settled and raised their first white flag thanks to the boot of Daniel Daly. Monaleen regained their 4 point advantage mid way through the half but from this point onwards the Fr. Caseys defense began to gain control. For the final 10 minutes of the half Fr. Caseys laid siege on the Monaleen goal but were guilty of some very poor shooting. Thankfully Billy Quirke was accurate on free kick duty and he added two points to the scoreboard to reduce the margin to 2 points at the break. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-03, Monaleen 1-02.

An early second half point from the impressive Billy Quirke had the deficit cut to a single points but Monaleen added a brace of points from play to extend their advantage. As the half progressed the blanket Monaleen defense witnessed in the first half was finally been breached and the speed of our forward line started to cause them problems. Cormac Roche kicked Fr. Caseys fifth point of the night before Billy Quirke outjumped the Monaleen keeper to fist a high ball to the back of the net. Finally in front Fr. Caseys extended their lead to two points thanks to James Riordan. A pointed free from Monaleen kept the contest alive but that was before Maurice Gleeson held his nerve in front of goal to dispatch yet another goal to the back of the Monaleen net. In the final 10 minutes both sides added two further points to their tallies, Billy Quirke and Maurice Gleeson on target for Fr. Caseys. After a poor first half display Fr. Caseys responded with a very positive second half performace. With over a month to the next championship game this team is definitely moving in the correct direction. The final score was Fr. Caseys 2-08, Monaleen 1-07.

County Junior A Football LeagueFr. Caseys 1-12 Ahane 1-05

Last Monday evening Fr. Caseys Junior footballers made the long trek to Ahane for their second game in the County League. Fr. Caseys made the perfect start with John Lane kicking two points from play in the opening 5 minutes. Ahane responded with a brace of points to level proceedings before Mark Broderick making his Junior debut added Fr. Caseys third point. John Lanes third point of the night gave Fr. Caseys a two point advantage once more but Ahane raised the bar in the final 10 minutes of the half kicking 1-02 without reply to lead by 1-04 to 0-04 at the break.

Fr. Caseys needed an early second half point and Thomas Sexton delivered to reduce the margin to 2 points. Ahane replied with a point from play but this would be their last score of the half as Fr. Caseys produced a flawless last 20 minutes with both defense and midfield dominating their markers and our forwards finally finding their range. John Lane went on a scoring spree and kicked 5 points in a row, 3 from placed balls to give Fr. Caseys a 2 point cushion. Timmy Gleeson was introduced and it didn't take long for him to show his class, adding another point to the scoreboard. The match points were sealed when the lively Kieran Foley aka Trucker marched through the Ahane defense and rattled the net. Thomas Sexton finished off the scoring with a late point as Fr. Caseys eased to victory with 7 points to spare. Another impressive display by our Juniors following on from their championship draw with Gerald Griffins. We will have to address the first half slumps but this youthful team is definitely starting to find form. The final score was Fr. Caseys 1-12, Ahane 1-05
