Co. Senior Football League Round 3

St. Kieran's 1-11
Fr. Casey's 0-06
We collected the first points of our County League campaign on Thursday evening last in blustery Coolcappa against Fr. Casey's. After suffering defeats to Na Piarsaigh and Rathkeale in the opening rounds we were hopeful of getting off the mark in this fixture. We played with the aid of the breeze in the opening half and enjoyed a lion's share of possession in the opening stages against the Abbeyfeale men. Anthony Molyneaux and Sean McSweeney, from placed balls, kept the scoreboard ticking over in first half. Sean Windle also raised a white flag, finishing after some good work at the back from John Doyle and Shane Lynch.  We led at half-time on a scoreline of St. Kieran's 0-06, Fr. Casey's 0-03. We continued to defend well in the second half, limiting Fr. Casey's attacking options. Ian Mackassey and Niall O'Shea were making some good runs and winning possession up front also. We retained possession well at times against a lot pressure from the Abbeyfeale defence. John O'Connor ended the game as a contest with 5 minutes remaining when he finished to the net after a long ball from Donie Nolan. Jack Ben Hartnett and Diarmuid Crowley both got on the score sheet before the final whistle. Michael Enright, when introduced late on, looked lively on the ball and eager for work also.  It must be mentioned that both teams were missing players on the night, with both squads minus their county panellists, but there were some encouraging aspects of our play both in defence and attack. The teams are due to meet again in the County Championship later in the year.
Panel: Patrick Histon, Michael Windle, Paidi McCarthy, Kevin Meade, Maurice Shine, John Doyle, Shane Lynch, Donie Nolan, Sean Windle, Jack Ben Hartnett, Anthony Molyneaux, Diarmuid Crowley, Sean McSweeney, Niall O'Shea, Ian Mackassey, Michael Enright, John O'Connor
West Junior B Football League Round 1
St. Kieran's 0-08
St. Senan's 0-12
The Junior B footballers got their season underway on Friday evening last when they took on a strong Saint Senan's team in Coolcappa. This was a repeat of the 2014 West Junior B football League final, a game which we won after a titanic battle in Knockaderry after extra time. We started slowly, despite playing with the breeze in the opening half, and fell behind by 5 points before we began to find any rhythm to our play. This was expected as it was our first outing of the year and rustiness was inevitable. As the game progressed our standard of play improved. Niall O'Shea kicked four points, two from open play and two from placed balls, coming up to half time to get us back into the game. Raymond Cahill, lining out at mid-field, also kicked a point in this half. Saint Senan's led at half time by a solitary score, 0-06 to 0-05. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Saint Senan's extending their lead to 5 points mid-way through the second half. We could have been further down only for some fine goalkeeping from Dan Madden. Shane Lynch and Padraig Trant also worked tirelessly at the back, repelling a number of Saint Senan's attacks. We continued to battle hard and added points from Seamus Mangan, Shane Lynch and Niall O'Shea before the final whistle to leave a final scoreline of St. Kieran's 0-08, St. Senan's 0-12. While some players were being rested for the Intermediate hurling game the following day, we remained competitive throughout against a skilful Saint Senan's team who deserved their victory on the night. If we can get a full panel of players together for training and matches we would be hopeful of further improvements. Our remaining league games are against Ballysteen, Rathkeale and Knockaderry.
Panel: Dan Madden, Padraig Trant, Nicky Kelly, Michael Steele, Michael Enright, Diarmuid Crowley, Shane Lynch, John Doyle, Raymond Cahill, Brian Crowley, Niall O'Shea, Seamus Mangan, Danny Collum, Raymond Brouder, Anthony Liston, Paddy Hartnett, Ian Mackassey, James Morrisroe, Ivan Neary

Co. Senior Football League Round 4
St. Kieran's 1-13
Monaleen 2-8
We travelled into Monaleen to take on the home side on Monday evening last in Round 4 of the County League. Played in sunny conditions, the game turned out to be a worthwhile exercise for our boys. Our lineout included the services of our county men, Johnny McCarthy and Darragh Tracey, who were both in action for the Limerick Senior footballers in their victory over Louth a day earlier. We were without our captain, Jack Ben Hartnett, who sustained an injury playing against Glenroe in Intermediate hurling over the weekend and we wish him a speedy recovery. The game was played a high tempo with both teams playing an attacking style of football. The Monaleen attack pressed our defence hard in the opening stages but we were well served by John O'Connor and Brendan McCarthy at the back. Our custodian, Patrick Histon, organised our defence capably and kept each of our defenders on their toes. Our scorers in the opening half included Sean McSweeney, Niall O'Shea and John Doyle, leaving us ahead at half-time on a scoreline of 0-07 to 0-06. The second half saw the introduction of Seamus Mangan in the full forward line, and he looked dangerous each time he gained possession. Seamus raised a green flag after a good move from defence to attack with 10 minutes remaining to put us six points clear. Diarmuid Crowley and Darragh Treacy also added points entering injury time. We then suffered a lapse in concentration in time added on, allowing Monaleen through for two goals. While it was disappointing to concede two goals in injury time, a lot of positives can be taken from the performance. We played better collectively as a team and were sharper in our play than in previous games. With approximately two weeks to the opening round of the County Championship against Adare, a considerable amount of work still has to be done by the panel in terms of preparation but there are signs of progress being made.
Panel: Patrick Histon, Michael Windle, Paidi McCarthy, Kevin Meade, Brendan McCarthy, Johnny McCarthy, John O'Connor, Sean Windle, John Doyle, Diarmuid Crowley, Darragh Treacy, Shane Lynch, Sean McSweeney, Niall O'Shea, Anthony Molyneaux, James Hough, Michael Enright, Seamus Mangan

U16 Division 2A Football.
The lads started their campaign with a good but hard earned win against Adare. During the match we went well ahead, at one stage 8 points clear. Adare looked like they were finishing the strongest and in a good spell of play brought the deficit down to 4 points. However our boys rallied well and saw out the opposition with a final score 4 7 to 1 12. Scorers on the day were Noel Callanan 2 2, Tommy Mullins 1 1, Liam King 1 0, John Hayes 0 2, Liam Kennedy 0 1 and Eoin McEnery 0 1. Next match is Monday 13thaway to Deel rangers.

U14 Challenge Match
On Sunday 29th March a panel of 20 players travelled to Castleisland to play Castleisland Desmonds. Conditions were tough and we meet a fine physical Kerry team. They provided our lads with a good tough practice session before our Feile semifinal last weekend.

U14 Semi-final
On Sunday 5th our boys played a fine tough game against Galbally. We played well on the day and the good news is that we have plenty of space left to improve. Keep up the good work lads and we should go far this year. Remember U14 training is Wednesday and good attendance is very important as we have a lot of football left to play this year.

U12 Challenge Match
We played Croagh in the last fortnight and we met an excellent team. They put it up to our boys and we were out-played on the day. We need to improve on our basics, like catching, blocking and supporting our players on the ball. Training for U12 is Monday nights, see below.
