March 31, 2015

Bord na n-Óg, Coiste Co. Luimní is delighted to announce that our hard working Secretary, Breda Breen-Harnett has been honoured by the Limerick Sports Partnership and received The "Gerard McDonnell" special award, Services to Sport at a function in the Strand Hotel last weekend.

Breda's received her award for many years services to Limerick GAA in her capacity of Secretary & Vice Chair, Bord na n-Óg, Coiste Co. Luimní since 2009 and as Secretary to West Bord na nÓg 2000-2008. She was presented with the Gerard McDonnell award by Ger's brother, JJ McDonnell pictured below (The award is commemorates the Limerick climber who tragically lost his life descending K2)

Her nomination read as follows:
Breda, now in her 4th year as Secretary of Limerick GAA's juvenile board, is a highly efficient and respected administrator over-seeing a fixture program of 1,600 games annually with 58 competitions in hurling & football for boys up to age of 16 years. Each fixture requires diligent planning of venues, referees, teams and mentors and very rarely does the process break down. She is always available via phone and e-mail. She handles affiliations, grading, sufficient game program, groupings to minimise travel. She is also capably responsible for all the logistics, (training venues, travel, meals etc) for all Limerick underage hurling teams which have seen a huge positive change in fortune in recent years.

In 2013, Breda was Secretary for the National Féile na nGael finals which were held in Limerick with over 200 teams from all over Ireland and Britain visiting Limerick. Breda was once again the chief organiser, of the fixture program which involved hundreds of games in hurling, camogie & handball. Not alone did Breda organise the fixture program, but was centrally involved with her committee in all the logistics of hosting the visiting teams, the massive parade from Gaelic Grounds to City Centre, liaising with An Garda Siochana, First Aid, City Authorities etc.

Prior to joining County Bord na n-Óg in 2009, Breda was a highly successful Secretary of West Bord na n-Óg where she introduced hurling and football academies for kids from 8-16 years and brought unprecedented success rates for divisional and club teams for West Limerick during her reign. In 2005, she was received a GAA Presidents prize for her services by GAA President, Sean Kelly MEP.

She is an amateur who works 5-6 hours daily and her professional administration is one of a no of factors behind emergence of Limerick underage hurling teams.
