U21 Hurling 15 a side Match Report

On Saturday last week we travelled to Knockaderry to play the west semi-final in what was going to be a tough weekend of hurling for the club as we would have to turn around on the following day and play Granagh/Ballingarr in the 13 a side championship.

The West Semi-final was against Dromcollogher/Broadford who had beaten us in the first round by 5 points, this game was made tougher by the notable absence of Seamus Mangan who had been one of our better performers so far in this competition, Our lads got a good start with Conor Barry and Jack Neville contributing to the early scores. David Holland was proving to be a handful for the Dromcollogher/Broadford backs and won some great frees. We were unlucky when Cian O'Connell was called back after winning a good ball and was through with a chance of a goal but the referee said he was fouled and Conor tapped it over for another point to leave us with a comfortable 3 point lead at half time.

It was in the first 10 minutes of the second half that we were undone, Dromcollogher/Broadford just seemed to get their scores easier and our backs were playing great stuff but some long range frees left us 2 point down inside 15 minutes. Eventually we got to grips with their midfield again and traded scores with Conor Barry stepping up and hitting some great frees and Mossy Shine also taking a good point after some great battling by Eoin Cuddihy and David Holland. With all of our efforts we couldn't get back on level terms with them and even up to the final whistle we had chances with Declan Guerin hitting the cross bar and the ball coming back out and Mossy shine being denied a goal from 6 yards out. Dromcollogher/Broadford ran out winners in the end by 4 points on a score line of 2-15 to 1-14.

Drum/Broadford went on to win the final last weekend beating Allaughaun Gaels by 2 points.

U21 Hurling 13 a side

On Sunday morning Last we had Granagh/Ballingarry at home in the second round of the 13 a side championship, We were battle scarred after our lads gave everything the day before against Dromcollogher/Broadford and with sore bodies we took to the field to keep our championship ambitions alive. The same as the day before, we started with some great early scores which set us up for the rest of the half. Our backs John, Paul, Andrew, Eoin and Damien were playing great stuff, the Granagh/Ballingarry forwards were being closed down completely and our forwards got some great ball which either ended up in a score from Conor Jack or Cian or in a free which Willie O'Meara converted. we had put ourselves in a great position at the end of the first half with a 3 point lead.

At the start of the second half we had a great chance to take the first point of the half but the ball went just wide, Granagh/Ballingarry then got a foothold on the game and struck us for 5 unanswered points. Then a couple of strange refereeing decisions would also not help us, we had position on two occasions and the referee after giving the free to us then threw the ball in, both occasions resulting in a score for the opposition. Our lads at this stage were shattered after playing two games of top class championship hurling in two days and the final score of Askeaton 3-9 to Grannagh/Ballingarry 4-15. This score did not reflect the effort these lads gave on the day and similar to the day before we still had chances up to the final whistle.

The Team was Michael O Meara, John Blackwell, Andrew Scully, Paul Maher, Eoin Cuddihy, Damien Lynch, Declan Guerin, Conor Enright, Conor Barry, Jack Neville, Stephen O Donnell, Cian O Connell & Willie O Meara  Subs  David Holland, Darragh Horgan, Darren Lane, Liam Horgan,

U21 Hurling 13 a side

On Sunday we played our third match in this championship away to Killeedy, a game we always knew would be a tough one and going there missing 2 of our starting 13 wasn't going to help us. After the two tough games the weekend before and knowing that with the way results were going in other games we would have found it very difficult to qualify for the knock out stages. Killeedy needed to win this to keep their Championship alive and we did not give it to them easy. We played the first half against a storm and Kileedy got the better of the early exchanges. Our forwards Willie, Cian, David, Conor and Harley were fighting for everything but we couldn't make enough chances count on the score board and we were behind 1-9 to 3 points at half time.

We had the wind to our backs in the second half, the early loss of Liam Horgan and Harley Moloney didn't help our efforts. Kileedy were pressing us hard and Declan and Conor Enright in midfield and also our defense did their best to keep them out with Andrew, Eoin, Damien, Paul and John all giving it everything. Micheal in goals had a tough day in the office too but kept the door shut as much as possible on the day. Eventually Kileedy won 2-19 to 0-5.

The Team was Michael O Meara, Liam Horgan , Andrew Scully, Paul Maher, Eoin Cuddihy, Damien Lynch, Declan Guerin, Conor Enright, Conor Barry, David Holland, Harley Moloney, Cian O Connell & Willie O Meara  Subs  John Blackwell, Darragh Horgan, Darren Lane, ,

A lot of credit has to be given to these bunch of lads when you consider that there will be no-one lost off this team for next year and two thirds of them will be available in two years' time. It just goes to show how competitive they are and if we can turn them out again next year they will be defiantly in with a great chance of bringing home a championship to the club.

There is one remaining fixture in this championship away to Feohanagh.
