U14 Football
Féile Peil Quarter Final
Monaleen 2-5 Galbally 4-5
This was a totally absorbing contest which went down to the wire, with unfortunately for Monaleen, the day ending in defeat. The first half did not go well for Monaleen, and they trailed by 3-4 to 1-1 at the break. The second half was all Monaleen, however, and they nearly reined in the big deficit with a massive effort and plenty of good football. Having had Galbally on the ropes and the deficit reduced to just a single score as the game entered its closing stages, Galbaly countered with a surging run up the field and scoring a goal to effectively end the game.
The first half had Monaleen under a lot of pressure, and indeed goalkeeper David McMahon pulled off a few excellent saves to keep the game alive. Monaleen were coping with the onslaught of pressure and beginning to frustrate their opponents until Galbally scored two quick goals to suddenly open up a big lead. With Barry Sutton working tirelessly up the wing, Monaleen worked the ball up to the forwards and Caolan Dignam turned his man and slotted coolly under the goalkeeper's body to bring Monaleen back into the game.
Monaleen applied constant pressure in the second half and the entire team put in an amazing performance full of bravery, speed, skill, and effort. Eoghan O'Driscoll jinked around his marker and his shot found the goal to close the gap to six points, and in the next few minutes Monaleen continued to press and kicked some lovely points. As time was running out and the Monaleen desperately sought an equalising score, the killer blow was struck at the other end.
Best of luck to our opponents in remainder of the competition.
Monaleen can now look forward with plenty of optimism to the championship starting in early May.

CAMOGIE CLUB NEWS
Our U12 team travelled to Crecora on Saturday for a challenge match against a very strong Crecora side. The Monaleen girls started well with a point from Grace Clohessy and so great play from Clodagh Power and Charlie Drury in defence. With no way through for Crecora, Niamh Moloney and Aoife Nelligan got on top in midfield and the scores came. Two more goals before half time left the score at 2-1 to 1-0. Crecora attacked hard in the second half but could only get 1 goal. Another good win for Monaleen and a great start to the season for this group of girls. Our first blitz in scheduled for next Saturday in Cappamore.

Monaleen GAA Tennis Club Notes

Our Grade 4 mixed team and our Grade 6 Ladies team played their Munster Semi-final matches in glorious sunshine in UL on Sunday. The standard of play in both matches was excellent. While our Grade 4 team of Gillian Carragher, Noelle Hassett, Frank O Brien and Tommy Judkowiak made it through to the finals in Waterford on 12th April by beating Ardfield Tennis Club Cork, our ladies team of Ruth Buckley  Cecilia Mansfield, Evelyn Hartigan and Tracey Hartigan were narrowly beaten by Douglas Tennis Club Cork. Congratulations to both teams on fine performances. Yesterday's standard was a great advert for the Club. Well done.
The graded Singles and Mixed Doubles Championships are taking place from April 19th to May 2nd. To enter the competitions, either enter your name on the sheets on display at the courts or reply to the mail message received about the championships. Entries need to be in by April 16th.
The Box League [a tennis ladder] is now being managed by Ian Murray. Please advise Ian if you would like to be included. In addition to the social tennis evenings every Tuesday at 7pm and every Sunday from 6pm, the box league is a great way to meet new members, get competitive games and get 'recognised' for Winter League 2015/16 selection. News on coaching courses is also available on the noticeboard at the courts.
Word has it that the carpet for the new courts will be laid this week. Exciting times for our small[ish!] club!
Please visit our facebook page 'Monaleen Tennis Club' for club news and recent photos from the Winter League matches.
