NEWCASTLE WEST G.A.A.

U21S GIVE IT

THEIR BEST

U21 West A Hurling Championship round 2

Newcastle West .........1-5

Croagh/Kilfinny ......1-14

Mick Neville Park was the venue on Saturday last and Martin Doherty refereed. The influential wind blew towards the new all weather pitch where the Limerick U14 camogie team were being put through their paces; the rain held off mainly and the wall being built at the bottom of the steep hill that tested many a hurler/footballer/camogie/Peil na mBan players' commitment was a welcome windbreak. We played with the wind in the first half and were 0-5 to 0-2 ahead at half time. The Hurley brothers Eoin (2) and Brian (3) scored the five points which included two superb sideline cuts by Brian. Our lead would have been greater but for the bad wides we hit. To balance, our goalkeeper Conor O'Sullivan made at least two first class saves.

Eoin Murphy's goal three minutes into the second half in response to Croagh/Kilfinny's 3rd point left us 0-5 ahead, 1-5 to 0-3 but it proved our only score of the second half as Croagh/Kilfinny took control of the game and outscored us 1-11 to 0-0 from the 35th to the 60th minute. In this period they demonstrated a wide range of skills, move-ment, catching, excellent first touching support play, accuracy, work-rate, passing, footwork, pace etc and undoubtedly deserved their win. Our lads of course didn't die, but effort alone won't suffice when faced by a team who are equally fit (fitter?) and have superior skills. Overall then 100% effort by our lads and a com-prehensive win for Croagh/Kilfinny which has them into the final.

Newcastle West Team: Conor O'Sullivan, Conor Relihan, Conor Barry, Cillian McMahon, Jack McCarthy, William Hurley, Seamus Hurley, Stephen Brosnan, Darragh McMahon, Shane Stack, Eoin Hurley 0-2, Brian Hurley 0-3, Daniel Copse, Eoin Murphy 1-0, Darragh Quilligan. Subs: Caleb O'Shea and Jack Fanning.

In round 3 probably on Saturday next but not confirmed as we go to press, we play Rathkeale. It's a winner take all situation with whoever is on top qualifying for the final v Croagh/Kilfinny.

U14 Hurling Féile B Championship Round 1

Newcastle West v Kildimo/Pallaskenry

Kildimo is the venue on Saturday next and there's a 4.30p.m. throw in. Kildimo is hurling country and our lads are sure to have character and skills well tested. Hopefully there wil be an improvement in the weather which will allow players and spectators to enjoy the first game of their new season.

Intercounty Senior football N.L. Division 3 Rounds 3 and 4

Limerick 1-6, Armagh 2-16

Limerick v Wexford

Ian Corbett wing back and Cian Sheehan full forward were at Kilmallock on Sunday and like the rest of the Limerick lads gave it their best shot. However, Armagh were the better team and Division 3 success and a return to division 2 in 2016 look very likely for them. Declan Brouder selected and those who couldn't get to Fitzgerald Park were kept up to date by Liam Aherne commentating for Live 95FM with the usual perceptive analysis from the Weekly Observer's Matt O'Callaghan.

On Sunday next limerick are away to Wexford and hopefully they will travel home from the sunny south east with the two points that will keep alive their hopes of retaining Division 3 status.

Intercounty Senior Hurling NL Division 1B Round 3

Limerick v Wexford

TJ Ryan will be targeting a win at the newly named Wexford park and it will be a major shock if Limerick don't get it. However Wexford hurling is on a roll and if Limerick do get the win they'll earn it. Those not making the journey will no doubt be tuning in to Liam Aherne.

Training

Training is under way by most club teams at this stage. There is general strength and conditioning for the adult players and hopefully senior and junior A footballers and inter and junior B hurlers are responding 100%. Hurling is the order of the day for the U21st as they look forward to the make or break game v Rathkeale, while Seamus O'Connor's minors, anticipating very challenging premier campaigns in football and hurling, are polishing up their skills at the all weather. The U16s and U14s are ready to resume, the U12s are back with a couple of weeks, while U10s/U8s return on Saturday next. Best of luck to all in the year ahead.
