NEWCASTLE WEST G.A.A. CLUB

U21 West A Hurling               Championship round 2

Newcastle West play Croagh-Kilfinny in the Bog Garden on Saturday at 3pm. All who are eligible, have played to a good standard at underage and are available, including Eoin Hurley, A. J. O'Connor, Eoin Murphy, Gavin Reidy, Cian Sheehan, Joey Healy, Shane Stack, Daniel Copse, Conor Relihan, Conor Barry, Darragh McMahon, William and Brian Hurley and Liam McCartan, are training hard and we fancy our chances. Unfortunately we are likely to be without some of those, but we are still looking forward to seeing the players pick up the two points. Best of luck to manager Mike McMahon and the team.

Training

Training is under way for most club teams and the others are about to start: pre-season strength and conditioning for the adult players to achieve the fitness required for senior, junior, U21 football, intermediate, junior B and U21 hurling. The U21s and minors are brushing up their skills in hurling; in football the minors, U16s and U14s are due back, the U12s have 12 sessions behind them, the U10s, U8s and U6s are back on Saturday 7th March and plans are afoot to begin recruiting beginners.

Intercounty senior  hurling NL round 2

Limerick ...................0-23

Antrim ......................1-12

Among the few Limerick supporters to travel to the Green Glens for last Sunday's game was our own Liam Aherne, former club player, mentor and PRO and now head of sports at Limerick Live 95FM. He was commenta-ting for his radio station and kept us up to date on progress at Ballycastle, home of the famous Oul Lammas Fair. As expected, Antrim battled really well but T. J. Ryan's team had the edge in class and were deserving winners. The hurling reporters in the dailies gave the player of the match award to Cian Lynch, and Tom Condon received high praise too. With Waterford scoring 3-21 and conceding a mere 0-12 to Laois, Limerick are in a battle to top the group and gain promotion. They will have a better idea of where they stand after the round 3 game away to Wexford on Sunday week; the latter, on full points from two games, top the group.

Intercounty football               senior NL Division 3               round 3

Limerick play Antrim at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday at 2pm. Only an optimist would back John Brudair's team, though Armagh blow hot and cold, but one never knows and no doubt Limerick will have learnt much from the defeat by Tipperary where their shooting was abysmal though they had plenty of possession. Cian Sheehan and Jamie Lee are the Newcastle West players on the panel. Declan Brouder is a selector, Seán McAul-iffe could be physiot-herapist and 'Oige' will no doubt be broadcasting. The legendary former Armagh captain Kieran McGeeney manages Armagh.

Famous rellies

Limerick camogie teams enjoyed the past ten days and Newcastle West players played their part. Karen O'Leary 0-1, Mike's sister, and Rebecca Delee, Robert's sister, lined out v Galway on Sunday at Ballinasloe. Leanne Brow-ne, daughter of former player Tom and first cousin of Alan O'Connor and Seán Neville, captained the Limerick minors v Dublin at Kilmallock on Sunday with Laura Walshe, Eamonn's daughter, on the panel too. Alice O'Connor, sister of Jack U12, and Clodagh Kelly, sister of Paudie U12, Liz Carmody, daughter of John and sister of Seán, both Monagea hurlers, Leah Kelly, Ambrose's daughter, and Isabella, Davy's grand-daughter, were with the U16s also at Kilmallock last Sunday week. Alice O'Connor is a grand-daughter of the late Donie Broderick, may he rest in peace, the great Limerick corner back, and like her grandfather she plays in the corner too! And Isabella Condon like her grandfather Davy plays wing forward!
