2014 Minor A Camogie Final - Replay

Newcastle West 3-9 (1-6) Killeedy 1-6 (1-5)

Sunday 18th January 2014 at 12pm in Tournafulla

A strong second half performance saw Newcastle West crowned 2014 Minor A Champions at the second time of asking. Their 3-9 to 1-6 victory over near neighbours Killeedy came after extra time in the drawn game before Christmas couldn't separate the sides.

A bright clear morning meant that conditions in Tournafulla lead to an open competitive game from the moment the ball was thrown in. Rebecca Delee opened the scoring for Newcastle West with a point from play after three minutes. Killeedy levelled two minutes later from an Aisling Scanlon free. A further free from Aisling dropped short into the square and Sarah Shanahan pounced on the breaking ball and struck clenly into the back of the net to put Killeedy ahead by 1-1 to 0-1.

A 45 and free from Newcastle West's Liz Carmody and another for Aisling Scanlon left the game finely balanced when good work by Newcastle West up the left hand side led to a cross to Laura Walshe on the edge of the square and from that distance whe made no mistake putting Newcatle West ahead 1-3 to 1-2.

Rebecca Delee added a point from play but Killeedy responded and good pressure led to two frees all converted by Aisling Scanlon and a superb point from play from Ellanna Mulcahy put Killeedy ahead again by 1-5 to 1-4.

Newcastle West were dominating possession in the half but it was not being reflected on the scoreline due in most part to some excellent defence from Killeedy with Denise Forde and Roisin Cunningham impressive throughout the game. Newcastle West closed the half on a high with another point from Rebecca Delee and an excellent point from Liz Carmody who broke from defence and split the posts from long range to leave the score at halftime Newcatle West 1-6 Killeedy 1-5.

Newcastle West's dominance began to tell in the second half as Leah Kelly stretched their lead inside the first minute. Aisling Scanlon responded from placed ball but that was to be Killeedy's last score of the game. But thing's remained tight until 20 minutes in when Rebecca Delee followed a point from play with an excellent goal to set up a lead of 2-8 to 1-6.

The game was finished as a contest two minutes later when Leah Kelly found the back of the net. Killeedy rallied but with goals required the Newcastle West defence remained firm under successive Killeedy balls dropped into the danger zone indeed the final score of the game came in injury time as Emily Upton received the ball inside her own half and broke forward and put the ball between the post.

The final whistle blew to scenes of jubilation from the Newcastle West supporters and players. Full time score: Newcastle West 3-9 Killeedy 1-6. Limerick Camogie Chairperson Seán Condon presented the trophy to captain Yvonne Lee after what was an excellent game of camogie.
