County Minor Hurling Final
Before a huge crowd mainly from Ahane last Sunday Ahane minor hurles contested the county final against Na Piarsaigh. Ahane had not contested a minor final since 1991 and were after a long break since they played there semi-final in October. Na Piarsaigh entered the game as favourites after an emphatic victory against Killmallock the week before.
At the toss Na Piarsaigh won and elected to play with the strong breeze. Ahane were first to settle and were on the score board after 2 mins with a pointed free from Tom Morrissey. Ahane were hurling well and were first to the ball and tagged on another point again from T Morrissey from a sideline cut from the uncovered stand side. Ahane's hurling was tough and were winning all the 50/50 ballls. Na piarsaigh tagged on there first point after 7 mins from R Lynch. Ahane for the next 10 mins seemed inspired and with points from T Morrissey 2 P Minihan 1 and 2 huge efforts from wing back Colum Carroll Ahane were on top. With the breeze against Ahane mentors decided to play with a sweeper system and it was working like a dream. Na Piarsaigh then seemed to spring to life and tagged on a few points to leave the score at half time Ahane 0-08 Na Piarsaigh 0-09. Ahane mentors must have been delighted with the performance in the first half with all players putting their bodies on the line and against a strong wind were only a point behind the favourities. As half time approached the sky darkened and a heavy shower fell. As players resumed the flood lights were on and after a short delay due to an injured Na Piarsaigh player play resumed. Ahane started as there lives depended on it and with a point from C O Mara sides were level. The hurling was tough and fair and outstanding for the time of year. Following the shower of rain the breeze seemed to disappear and again Ahane mentors decided to play the sweeper system with P O Hallorhan bringing out ball after ball and putting pressure on the Na Piarsaigh backs Ahane lead by 4 points. Like all matches one team will not dominate for  the 60 mins Na Piarsaigh stemmed the tide and tagged on four points to leave the sides level. It was nip and tuck and with the smell of victory in sight and the clock running down Na Piarsaigh broke up the field and scored a point to leave on between them with 4 mins to go. Ahane rallied and went in search of the equalizer the ball broke up the field again and into the hand of the Na Piarsaigh full forward and with just A O Brien the Ahane goalie to beat blazed the ball wide. The huge Ahane support drew a breath of relief and roared the team on to find the equalizer from the puck out Ahane won a free and with the coolest of player up stepped T Morrissey yo level the match with 2 minutes left. No side could find the winner and referee R Moloney blew his whistle a draw. This was one of the best hurling matches played this year in Limerick pity it was on so late. A draw was a fitting result on the day as neither team deserved to lose. It would be unfair to single out any player as this was a team effort every player giving 110% . Those who missed the drawn game will cherish the relay if it is half as good. The club would like pay credit to this bunch of  players as they have been together since last April and are not finished yet and next week seek the coveted County title.
