Monaleen club notes

September 29, 2014

Club Sympathies: Our Deepest sympathies to the family of the late Jim Laffan who passed away on Saturday. Jim played with the club for a number of years and will be sadly missed. Ar Dheis Dé go Raibh a anam.

LOTTO:  There was no winner of last week's jackpot of €13,900 numbers drawn were 9, 14, 25 and 29.  The next jackpot will be €14,200.  Our four lucky dip winners were:  D. Gaughan, D. Whelan, M. Sheehan and J. Flynn. Tickets can be purchased on a weekly basis from local shops and pubs.  Please support us as this support is vital to the development of the club.
The Intermediate Hurlers face Cappamore in Caherconlish this Saturday in the CHAMPIONSHIP at 4pm.  After a disappointing loss in the last game to Kildimo/Pallaskenry, this is a must-win fixture for our lads. Please come along and support us!
Our Junior B Hurlers are in action on Sunday next in Caherconlish versus Camogue Rovers in the County Quarter Final at 12pm.  After winning our second consecutive city Title a few weeks back, a lot is expected from our lads on Sunday. Please come along and support us.

LADIES FOOTBALL: For all news and updates, like the Monaleen Ladies Football Facebook page
Gaelic for Mothers & Others:  Our Gaelic for Mother and Others(G4M&O) goes from strength to strength.  We now have over 30 members, with new recruits by the week.   Training Times have changed  as the nights begin to draw in - 7.30 - 8.30 in the Clubhouse field.  New recruits are always welcome - contact Caroline O'Kane at 087 6448807.  We have a blitz coming up on Saturday 11th where we welcome St. Ailbes and Murroe/Boher. It promises to be lots of fun, and everyone is welcome to come along and support us in the clubhouse field.

George Fitzpatrick Tournament: Our under 13 girls host West Clare Gaels, Fermoy and St Ailbes in the George Fitzpatrick Tournament.  This tournament grows in popularity each year.  This years teams will provide a very strong challenge for our girls.
Our 2011 Feile Team: Eimear Skally scored the vital 2nd goal for Cork in their win over Dublin yesterday.  The Dublin defence could not match the Monaleen defence who held Eimear when we played them in Feile in Cork in 2011. Eimear is a young outstanding talent and we will hear a lot more about her in the future.
U16 Ladies: The girls played Murroe in the A County Championship Final on Wednesday night last week, at South Liberties GAA.   Murroe went into the game as heavy favourites, as they had 7 players involved with the U16 Limerick County team during the season, and had posted huge wins in every game so far this year.  Monaleen went into the game with a plan to flood midfield and try to win the contact area in this area of the field, while feeding good quality ball to Caoimhe Lyons at full forward.  The girls implemented the game plan superbly, with Jane Clohessy and Aisling Doyle supplementing the hard work of Grace Donovan and Claire Kelly in midfield brilliantly, and Sarah Shortt providing the playmaking as Monaleen stormed into a 2-2 to 0-1 lead after 20 minutes, with goals from Sarah Shortt and Caoimhe Lyons.  Having controlled this opening period, Monaleen were rocked on their heels when a dip in concentration allowed Murroe back into the game, and after a frantic 3 minute period, the sides were level.  The excellent Murroe side never looked back from that point, going in at the break 6 points up.  They were ruthlessly efficient in the second half, punishing every Monaleen mistake to tab on score after score, and despite a strong fight from our girls and some excellent individual performances, Murroe ran out comfortable winners in the end.  Had the Monaleen girls controlled their possession better at critical times, the result could have been different, but they were unfortunately unable to maintain their excellent start, and Murroe were deserving County Champions.  Congratulations to our girls who performed brilliantly to reach the A Final, having won U12A four years ago and U14A and Feile 2 years ago.  Hopefully the girls will all graduate to the Minor and Ladies set up in the coming year.
U16/U14/U12:Training continues on Sundays from 12:30 - 13:30.

JUVENILE HURLING & FOOTBALL:
U15 Footballers: Congratulations to our U15 boys who won the Division 1 Football Final in Claughaun on Sunday afternoon, defeating Newcastle West by two points.  It was a thrilling encounter, with two evenly matched teams.  Despite an early lead from our boys, the match ended in a draw at full time.  Extra time proved to be nail biting, with scores at both ends.  Our lads edged ahead in the final minutes and held on tight to their lead to win it out with a scoreline of 2-5 to 9 points.  Well done boys!  We wish the very best to Scott Kavanagh who unfortunately got a serious injury to his knee during the match, and hope he has a speedy recovery.

MONALEEN CAMOGIE:
U10: Our U10's travelled to Mungret on Saturday 20th to compete in the annual County blitz.  We were undefeated in the group stage with results as follows:
Tournafulla 0-Monaleen 0; Bruff 1- Monaleen 1 (Ellie Madden); Monaleen 1 (Laura Brennan) - Cappamore 0; Kildeedy 0 - Monaleen 1 (Laura Brennan).  These results meant that we topped the group and qualified for the A Plate competition. We were drawn against Ballybrown in the knockout stages but despite a strong performance were defeated. This doesn't detract from a great showing in the competition so well done girls!
Team: Ellie Madden, Isabelle O'Riordan, Aoife O'Brien, Faye Coffey, Laura Brennan, Katlyn Power
Kim Ivory. Laurie Murnane, Ciara Downey, Aisling Downey, Emily O Halloran, Abi Houlihan,
Laura Southern, Catriona Burke, Claire Maloney, Caoimhe Brady
U8:Our U8's were in Kileedy last Saturday to compete in the U8 County blitz and put in some very strong performances in their 4 matches. The results were as follows: Monaleen 7 - Croagh Kilfinny 0; Monaleen 3 - Knockaderry 1; Monaleen 7- Crecora B 0; Monaleen 8- Treaty Gaels 0
Team: Aoife O Brien, Ellie Madden, Niamh Twomey, Faye Coffey, Isabella Collins, Laurie Murnane, Emily O'Riordan, Ciara Downey, Aisling Downey, Sarah O'Halloran,
Special thanks to Brian Madden who stepped in as an impartial referee at short notice!
U16: On Friday the U16 girls played a county semi- final against Galbally in Peafield Road.  Monaleen started strongly with goals from Caoimhe Lyons & Caitlin Bonfil contributing to a lead of 3-1 to 1-1 after 15 minutes.  A strong finish to the half despite some great defending from Niamh Holmes, Susan Fullen and Sinead Quinn in the full back line meant there were only 2pts between the sides at half time.  Injuries to key players in the second half did not help Monaleen and goals from Caoimhe and Ruth Heavey were not enough to keep Galbally at bay.   Shalini Kujur and Aisling Doyle had great performances on the night but the final score of 6-7 to 6-4 meant that Monaleen were out of the competition.
Monaleen: Aisling Doyle; Sinead Quinn; Niamh Holmes; Caoimhe Lyons (4-2); Robyn O'Donnell; Shalini Kujur; Aoife O'Driscoll; Ailish Wiley; Fiona Fitzpatrick; Laura Hession; Caitlin Bonfil(1-0); Aine Doyle(0-1); Aisling Kennedy; Ruth Heavey(1-0); Susan Fullen
