All-Ireland Intermediate Football Sevens

Last weekend a bus loaded with players and supporters left Rathkeale at 6.30am headed for Ratoath in Co Meath to participate in the All-Ireland Intermediate Football Sevens Competition. The day out was enjoyed by everyone, players, managers and supporters alike. The club were represented by Dean Maune, Damien Quaid, Sean O'Shea, Patrick Sheahan, Sean Sheahan,   Darren Jones, Shane Hourigan, Mikey Morrissey, Eoin O'Donnell and Mark O'Sullivan. All ten players definitely represented the club with pride on the day and showed real pride in the jersey with everyone giving their all to win the games. Some fantastic, fast football was played in the competition and as it went on the performances kept improving from our lads. We played in a group of 4 in the group stages and lost the first game to Derry side Ballymaguigan (St Therese) 1-05 to 3-06. We learned a fair bit from that defeat and went on to win our remaining three group games, beating Raheen from Kildare (2-09 to 3-03), Cashel from Longford (4-03 to 0-06) and Annaclone from Down (2-06 to 2-05). These results meant we qualified in 2nd place from the group and were into the last sixteen. A short break for dinner and to get the draw for the last-16. We were drawn to meet Borrisakane (Tipperary) in this game which we won well 5-09 to 3-02. Onwards to the last eight and the quarter finals. We drew An Gaelteacht (Kerry) in the quarter finals and were eventually beaten by the narrowest of margin (1-11 to 1-10) after a fantastic game with great scores and commitment from both sides. That defeat meant we were out but we waited on to see the semi-finals and final. Some satisfaction was gained when An Gaelteacht went on to win the competition beating Watty Grahams (Maheragh Derry) 2-07 to 1-06 in the semi final and beating Glen John Martins (Down) in the final (1-13 to 0-12).
Nothing for it at that stage but back onto the bus and head for home. Tired bodies, sore limbs but a real feel good factor. A great day out with everyone looking forward to a repeat in 2015 if possible.

U21 Football Premier Championship
2013 was a great year for our club with one of the highlights being the winning of the Premier U21 football championship. As reigning county champions, we will begin the defense of our title on 24th October 2014 against Ahane. The combination team from Sean Finns and Cappagh/Kilcornan have a huge task in hand to retain the title. Games will be on Friday night under lights for five successive weeks. The full list of group-2 games is as follows:
Friday 24th Oct, Rathkeale/Cappagh v Ahane
Friday 31st Oct, Rathkeale/Cappagh v Newcastlewest
Friday 7th Nov, Rathkeale/Cappagh v St kierans
Friday 14th Nov, Rathkeale/Cappagh v Bruff
Friday 21st Nov, Rathkeale/Cappagh v Shamrocks.
Group-1 consists of Oola, Athea/Mountcollins, Ballybrown, Black & Whites, Fr Caseys & St Johns.
The top team from both groups earns an automatic semi-final spot while 2nd  from one group plays 3rd from the other group in both quarter finals. All to play for and if the competition turns out anywhere near as good as the 2013 version it will be worth watching.

Scrap Metal
There's an old saying that says "It's an ill wind that blows no good". Maybe the storms of the spring have increased the possibility of scrap metal in the area. We would like take this opportunity to remind our friends and supporters that the club has an on-going scrap metal collection operation in place. Contact James O'Connor or any committee member if you have anything to donate. Collection can be arranged if necessary.

Kerry do a double
The kingpins of football made it 37 senior titles with a win over Donegal last Sunday at headquarters. In a game that was far from a great spectacle, The winners profited from some serious errors from Donegal to finally win by a goal. In the minor game, Kerry also accounted for Donegal to claim their fifth title.

All-Ireland Hurling Final Replay
This Saturday evening sees the replay of the hurling final between Kilkenny and Tipperary. It is probably too much to hope for a game as good as the drawn game but it is sure to be a close affair. Any club member looking for tickets are asked to text their name to the club secretary before 5pm on Wednseday for inclusion in the draw. The club has a very limited number of tickets priced at €50 each. We do not have any juvenile tickets.
