Ballybrown GAA club notes

September 15, 2014

COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Ballybrown concluded our group games on Saturday evening when we took on NaPiarsaigh in the Gaelic Grounds. Ballybrown neded to start well to have any chance of beating Munster champions NaPiarsaigh. This did not happen and instead NaPiarsaigh raced into a 1-06 to 0-01 point lead after only ten minutes with our score coming from Alan O Conner. Points from David Burnes and Richie Kenny and then two goals from Alan O Connor and we were back level. We were now back in the game but a 65 followed by a free and then we conceded a 21 yard free which Shane Dowling blasted to the back of the net opened a five point gap again. Ballybrown to our credit rallied again and another point from centre back Richie Kenny and a lovely side line cut from wing back Stevie O Reilly and a point from a free for NaPiarsaigh in between, left the half time score at 2-09 to 2-05 to NaPiarsaigh. Three points from frees from Alan O Connor and points from Brian Griffen and Mikey Kiely against four points from NaPiarsaigh had cut the deficit to three points with ten minutes to go. Ballybrown were playing very well at this stage and were pushing hard for scores which left gaps in our back line which NaPiarsaigh were quick to exploit and scored 1-04 to a point from Shane Kenny to run out winners on the night 3-17 to 2-11 a scoreline which didnt do justice to our gallant effort. With five minutes to go a huge roar from our supporters confused many of the players and neutrals as word came through that Effin had beaten Granagh Ballingarry and thus secured our Senior status for 2015 I would like to commiserate with Granagh Ballingarry they put in some great displays this year and will  be gutted. Ballybrown are now out of the championship but we have qualified for the county cup and we now face our neighbours Patrickswell in a mouth watering semi final in the near future.

CITY JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Ballybrown 3-20 Old Christians 2-10 played in Monaleen on Sunday the foundation for this success was laid in the first half with Ballybrown leading 3-11 to 0-05 at half time. Old Christians got more into the game in the second half but it took two late goals to put a better reflection on the score board. We are now into the City semi final for the first time in a few years and will come up against stiffer opposition the next day out. There is a nice balance to the team and we should fear nobody in the City. Scorers for Ballybrown Andrew Cliffe 1-07 Mark Sheehan 1-02 Brian Hartian 1-01 Patrick Hartigan 0-06 Killian Gavin 0-02 Fergal Kearney and Ivan Conway 0-01 point each.
