Junior B Championship West Semi-Final

Glin 0-13 St. Kieran's 2-8

Our Junior B side suffered a cruel defeat in Askeaton last Friday evening in the West championship semi-final. Having the lion's share of possession in the opening period, Ger Lyons, Paul Culhane, John, James and Oliver Wallace all scored points in the first half. However St. Kieran's responded to each score and scored a goal in the 25th minute against the run of play. David Horan responded with a fine curling point on the stroke of half time leaving us a point down.

We took control of the second half right from the off. As our defence nullified the threat posed by the opposing forwards, James and John Wallace were a constant thorn in the St. Kieran's defence with their piercing runs and well taken points, being ably supported by Paul Culhane. When Johna Culhane kicked point number 13 in the 55 minute, we had a three point heading into the last 5 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, a speculative long ball down the line caught out our backs and St. Kieran's scored their second goal to tie up the game. As proceedings went into injury time, St. Kieran's converted a free 40 yard from goal to give them a 1 point victory.

It was a very disappointing end to an otherwise great year for the Junior Bs. We were narrowly defeated in the Junior B league semi-final and for the first time in our history reached the semi-final stage of the championship after a 100% record in the group stages. Huge credit must go to the management team of James O'Donovan and Mike Sweeney for turning the team into a strong, skilful and competitive outfit over the past number of years and Seán Lyons deserves great praise for all his training sessions during the year. While the defeat may be a bitter pill to swallow now, there is great potential in this team and 2015 may well be the year in which we final bring some silverware home to Glin.

Junior A Championship West Semi-Final

Glin 1-11    Cappagh-Kilcornan 0-13

Askeaton was once again the venue for our Junior A semi-final last Saturday evening. Sporting our new jerseys sponsored by Barrett's Bar, we had our largest panel of the year available and it wasto prove a key factor in the end.

Tommy Culhane got Glin of the mark in the 5th minute with a well taken point after being set up by Darren Sheahan. Soon afterwards, good work by Edmond Horan and Paddy Fitzgerald in the middle of the field released Mark Culhane, who slotted over from a tight angle. Philip Moloney then ran up from centre back to knock over a point in response to two long range Cappagh/Kilcornan frees. In the 21st and 22nd minutes, Mark Culhane curled over two frees from an acute angle in the left corner forward position and these were followed up with a point from Pádraig Scanlon and another from Mark. C/K kicked two points of their own just before half time to leave the score 0-7 to 0-4 in Glin's favour.

The second half began brightly. Mark spotted Darren in space 30 yards form goal and his inch-perfect pass found Tommy all alone and he crashed a left footed shot to the back of the net. Mark then added another point from a 45' to give Glin with a 7 point lead. However, instead of pressing home our advantage, it was Cappagh/Kilcornan that took the initiative reeling off 5 points in a row to bring them right back into the game. It could have been worse but for resolute defending from our backs, especially Timmy O'Connor and Brian O'Donovan. Mark relieved some of the pressure with an important free and Pádraig kicked another point from long range to give some breathing space but C/K once more went back up the field kicking further points. Mark added another free 5 minutes from time putting us two ahead, but it was a nervy few minutes for Glin and C/K scored another point before referee Martin Doherty blew the final whistle. It finished Glin 1-11 Cappagh/Kilcornan 0-13. Fr. Casey's now await in what promises to be a mouth-watering West Junior Final on Sept. 20th.
