St Mary's/Sean Finns GAA Club notes

Senior Football Championship

We played Drom Broadford last Saturday in round-4 of the championship. Playing without a number of regulars due to injury, this was never going to be an easy task. On the night we were eventually beaten on a final score-line of 2-15 to 1-06 but our lads were well in the game up to the three quarter mark when only a couple of points was between the sides. Eleven unanswered points for Drom Broadford in the last 15 minutes gave them a comprehensive victory and leaves us with no chance of making the knock-out stages. Indeed all 3 qualifying spots are now secured by Drom/Broadford, St Patricks and Ballylanders leaving ourselves, Monaleen and Pallasgreen to fight it out over the scraps.
Seanie Buckley opened the scoring for Drom/Broadford with a good point before Steven Power replied with a gem for Sean Finns. Ray Lynch got a fine goal for Drom/Broadford but Eoin O'Donnell replied with a point for us before setting Timmy O'Connor up for a goal to push us ahead by a point on 15 minutes. Kevin Noonan scored another goal from Drom/Broadford shortly after with Eoghan O'Connor again replying for us with another point. Two late points from Derry McCarthy and Killian Phair for Drom/Broadford saw them lead at half time 2-03 to 1-03.
In the second half, Cillian Fahy opened for Drom/Broadford with a point before Patrick Wilmott & Barry O'Riordan replied for us with a pair. At the half-way stage, Sean Finns began to struggle at midfield and a string of 10 unanswered points saw Drom/Broadford converting their dominance onto the scoreboard. Points from Reidy, Fahy, Noonan, Buckley (1 each), McCarthy (2), Phair (5) with a single late reply from Timmy O'Connor saw Drom/Broadford run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-06.
Team: Jimmy Dillane, Shane Hourigan, Sean O'Shea, Dean Maune, Darren Jones, Patrick Sheahan, Mikey Morrissey, Steven Power, Trevor Nolan, Sean Sheahan, Eoghna O'Connor, Eoin O'Donnell
Patrick Wilmott, Barry O'Riordan, Timmy O'Connor. Subs: Jonny Mooney, Conor Lyons, Alan O Shea, Gearoid Mulcaire, Dylan Young,

Our final group game against Monaleen is on Friday 5th September in Clarina at 6.30pm. Both teams have no hope of making the quarter finals but a win for either side will remove any possibility of relegation. Still plenty to play for.

West Junior Hurling semi-final.
It's been an eventful week for the Junior Hurlers. We were due to play Feohanagh in the semi-final last Wednesday despite being originally told that they would go ahead last weekend. The mid-week fixture meant that we would have been playing without four regulars due to work and holidays and despite trying our utmost to get it re-fixed for either Tuesday or Friday or indeed any other day, we got nowhere. We were told it couldn't be changed as the opposition couldn't change because county minors weren't allowed play on Tuesday or Friday but interestingly most county minors played on Tuesday night in the senior & intermediate championships with their clubs and again on Friday night in the premier Minor Hurling championships. In the end both the opposition club and the West board refused to countenance any change leaving us in a right quandry. Do we just go and play this vital game with a throw together team for the sake of fulfilling the fixture or make a stand? In the end we made a stand and refused to play on the night. We await the results of that stand but word is that we are been thrown-out of the competition. The old saying goes "where there is a will there is a way" but unfortunately the willingness just wasn't there to facilitate the required change.

West Senior Hurling Championship Final
The Rathkeale House Hotel sponsored West Senior Hurling championship final between Knockaderry and Feenagh/Kilmeedy was due to be played in the Bog Garden last Sunday evening but was postponed by the West Board at the request of Feenagh/Kilmeedy.

West Minor Football Championships
Our minor footballers await the fixture of the semi-finals which are held up due to Limericks involvement in the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Final. As group winners, will be in the A Semi-finals against the team that finishes 4th in the group

Minor Hurling
St Marys will need results against Askeaton and Feenagh/Kilmeedy if we are to retain any hope of making the top-2 places and secure a semi-final spot. We have plenty of games in the pipeline and the management and players, under the guidance of Jerry Molyneaux are all set for action. Our game against Askeaton is scheduled for August 29th.

Bord na nOg
Our under 16 footballer recorded a good win against Drom/Broadford on Monday evening and now have qualified for the county semi-final. Our under 14 footballers lost against Askeaton by 3 points in the shield final in Mick Neville Park on Saturday.
Best of luck to all our club players with the Limerick underage teams in the coming weeks.

Limerick Minor Hurlers
Best wishes to the Limerick Minor Hurlers face Kilkenny in the All Ireland Final on September 7th.  Kilkenny will no doubt prove to be tough opposition in the September showdown, best of luck to all involved in their preparations. Luimneach Abu.

All-Ireland Tickets
Any club member looking for tickets to the final are asked to contact the club secretary before Sunday evening next. Family tickets are not available. Expectation is that supply will not meet demand so a draw will be arranged.

Leaving Cert Results
Congrats to all our members who received their leaving cert results last week. Best of luck to everyone as they now embark on a new period in their lives.

Australia Bound
All involved in the club would like to extend our best wishes to Gerard Frawley and Gary Enright who flew to Australia on Wednesday last. Both lads have been stalwarts of the club for a good few years. There's no doubt that they will be missed here by both their families and their club-mates but we are all hoping that both the lads will enjoy life out there.

All-Ireland Football Semi-Final
A full house is expected at Limerick's Gaelic Grounds next Saturday night for the replay of the All-Ireland Football semi-final between Kerry & Mayo. It's bound to be a great occasion with a great atmosphere. Tickets are currently available on GAA.ie.

Scrap Metal
There's an old saying that says "It's an ill wind that blows no good". Maybe the storms of the spring have increased the possibility of scrap metal in the area. We would like take this opportunity to remind our friends and supporters that the club has an on-going scrap metal collection operation in place. Contact James O'Connor or any committee member if you have anything to donate. Collection can be arranged if necessary.
