Senior County League
Fr. Caseys 0-13 Newcastle West 1-12

Fr. Caseys took on Newcastle West last Tuesday evening in Abbeyfeale in round 6 of the county league. Both teams went into the game occupying the top two spots in the league table with St. Patricks following closely behind in third. Victory for either side would almost guarantee a place in the league final.

Newcastle West kicked the opening two points before Fr. Caseys replied with a point from Tommy Smith. A Newcastle West point stretched the lead to two points before Jonathon Lyons making his Senior debut kicked a brace of points to level proceedings. In the closing ten minutes of the half Newcastle West kicked three pointed frees to Fr. Caseys single point to level the men from Abbeyfeale trailing by two points at the break. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-04, Newcastle West 0-06.

Newcastle West stretched their lead with an early point after the restart before Fr. Caseys finally hit form and kicked four unanswered points to take the lead for the first time. Billy Quirke, Maurice Gleeson and a brilliant long range point from Denis Fitzgerald were the scorers for Fr. Caseys. Just when it looked like Fr. Caseys were gaining control Newcastle counter attacked and blasted the ball to the back of the net from close range. Newcastle West further extended their lead to three points with their ninth point of the night before a pointed free from Robert Browne helped reduce the deficit. Newcastle West regained their three point advantage but Fr. Caseys were far from finished yet and three unanswered points from Billy Quirke, Jamie O'Connor and Kevin O'Connor leveled the scores with five minutes remaining. It looked like Fr. Casey were the most likely to emerge victorious at this stage but Newcastle West as they had done all night made the most of their limited chances and kicked two points, one from a free to steal a two point victory. Fr. Caseys may have had the lion's share of possession all night and looked the most dominant but Newcastle West were the more clinical in front of goal and in the end that was the only statistic that matter. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-13, Newcastle West 1-12.

Junior A West Championship
Fr. Caseys 0-05 Glin 1-08

Fr. Caseys travelled to Athea last Friday evening to take on Glin in round four of the West Championship. Both teams went into the game with a perfect record and knew that victory would almost certainly guarantee a semi-final spot.

On a damp night it was Glin who started the brightest and kicked a point in the opening minute. Five minutes later and they had found the back of the net when they reacted quickest to a broken ball and blasted to the net. A pointed free from Tommy Smith reduced the margin but Glin soon restored their four point advantage with another point from play. In the final ten minutes of the half Glin outscored Fr. Caseys by three points to one with Chris Smith on target for Fr. Caseys with a long range free. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-02, Glin 1-05.

A pointed free from Glin was the opening score of the second half before Chris Smith was on target again with a long rang free. At this stage Fr. Caseys lost three players through black and red cards offenses and from that point onwards the uphill battle was made much more difficult. Fr. Caseys to their credit battled gamely and matched their opponents score for score in the second half with two pointed Glin frees being cancelled out by a pointed free from Chris Smith and a point from Shane O'Connor that could have found the net only for a great save by the Glin keeper. To be fair the scoreline somewhat flattered Fr. Caseys as Glin had been more dominant throughout but were wasteful in front of goal. Fr. Caseys never seemed to come to grips with the greasy conditions and the loss of six first team players through work and holiday commitments proved to be a major disadvantage. With qualification for the quarter finals almost certain our Juniors still can claim an automatic semi-final spot with victories over Monagea and Granagh/Ballingarry in their final two league games. This team has performed excellently all year and one bad performance will not define their summer. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-05, Glin 1-08.
