Newcastlewest weekly Notes

Intermediate Hurling County League struggling to field a team
There was some disappointment when we couldn't field a team for last Saturday evening's game in Pallasgreen. Lack of interest, injuries, emigration and retirements are all contributing to what may be termed a crisis! Hopefully there will be an improvement in the situation before we oppose Claughaun in round 1 of the county championship second tier; time will tell. Training continues.

Senior football
Strong progress is being made by Mike Quilligan's team. A West final v Adare or St. Kieran's awaits, and on Tuesday 15th April we had a narrow win over Dromcollogher-Broadford in the County League.

U15 Hurling County League
At Rhebogue last Wednesday after being behind at half-time we beat St. Patrick's 7-8 to 5-6.

U16 Football Premier County Championship round 3
Unfortunately Monaleen couldn't field a team on Monday for our home game and gave us a walkover. The two points and full points from 3 games are welcome, but games are what the players, mentors and supporters want. Training continues.

U16 Hurling Division 2 County Championship round 3
Newcastle West play Askeaton-Ballysteen on Monday at 6.45pm in Askeaton. We played well and won against Adare a week ago at the field. A similar display could have us on full points, but complacency must be avoided. Training continues.

U15 Football County Championship
Newcastle West play Old Christians today Wednesday at 6.30pm, a home game for us but the field is out due to Limerick v Clare in the Munster minor foot-ball championship back door. Old Christians walloped us in the 2013 county U14 championship final; then they were a powerful, physical outfit, Wednesdaywill tell if things have changed.

The young
U14: training continues. The team are young but are out of both Feile.
U12s county league is about to get under way. Training continues.
U10: cluster blitzes and challenges and training in football and hurling are the agenda.
U8 cluster blitzes are under way, training is on Saturdays at 10am in An Pairc Amuigh.

Intercounty minor football Munster Championship round 1
Limerick......................1-7
Cork..........................6-15
Five people from the club were on the Limerick team that lost to Cork at Pairc Ui Rinn last Wednesday. Andy Brouder, goalkeeper, Seán Murphy, full back, Seán Ivess, wing back, Shane Stack, corner forward, and Brian Hurley 0-1, sub. In addition Stephen Brosnan of Monagea who played minor with us in 2013 was at corner back.

Intercounty minor football Munster Championship back door
Limerick play Clare on our field today Wednesday at 6.30pm. Both teams lost heavily in round 1, Limerick 1-7 to 6-15 against Cork and Clare 0-7 to 2-16 against Kerry. Today's game should be well contested! The winners play Waterford and the winners of that game come up against Cork in the semi-final. Our five plus Stephen Brosnan could all start and our senior football coach Gerry O'Sullivan manages.

Club lottery
This week's draw was scheduled for the Old Mill bar yesterday, Tuesday, due to the bank holiday, for a jackpot of €17,000 and five €40 lucky dips. The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery.

U10 Hurling Challenge
On Friday evening last, we played a hurling challenge against Knockaderry in perfect conditions for hurling.
We had 15 players and played an 11-a-side game over 4 x 10minute quarters with each player guaranteed to play in 3 of the 4 quarters. We started brightly and even though it was our first hurling game of the season, showed some deft touches and good scoring ability built on some tight defending. During the first half we built up a good lead leading at this stage 3-5 to 1-0. Knockaderry came storming into it in the third quarter scoring 4 unanswered goals, so entering the final 10 minutes all was to play for. This proved to be nail biting and it was a last minute goal that proved to be the crucial score. The final score was 5-6 to 6-0; credit to all players for putting the shoulder to the wheel to grind out the result. Thank you also to Knockaderry for providing us with the great challenge.
Players: Aaron Mullane, Oisin Collins, John O'Grady, Ethan Kirwan, Aaron Neville, James Lyons, Sean Geraghty, Jamie O'Regan, Kasper Bochnak, Con Hayes, Harry Edwards, Patrick Noonan and John Whelan, Dillon Scanlon
There is a hurling blitz on Friday April 25th. Notification of venue and time will be provided by text when details are confirmed.

Useful Information
Clare have won at least one game in each of the last five seasons in the Munster Minor Football Championship and need a victory against Limerick to stretch that record to 6 seasons.
Since 1956, Cork and Kerry have won every Munster Minor Football title with the exception of 1984, 1995, 2011 and 2012 when Tipperary were successful.
Kerry have played 56 games in the Munster Minor Football Championship since 2000, leading Tipperary who played 54 games in the same period.
Cork, Kerry and Tipperary won at least 1 match in the Munster Minor Football Championship every year since 2001 and their first round victories ensured that record stretches for another year.
Waterford have won 2 of their last 21 matches in the Munster Minor Football Championship.
Limerick have won one of their last 12 matches in the Munster Minor Football Championship.
All 6 counties have been involved in draws since 2000. Remarkably Kerry, Cork, Tipperary and Clare have all had 4 draws in that period while Waterford have had 5 and Limerick 3.
