SENIOR HURLERS

All roads led to Semple Stadium in Thurles on Sunday for the much anticipated Munster Club Final against Waterford kingpins Ballygunner.

The lads have had a phenomenal record in the Munster club remaining unbeaten in 12 games since their maiden voyage in Walsh Park in 2011 which ironically enough was also against Ballygunner.

We got off to the best possible start when Kevin Downes brushed aside the Ballygunner fullback to rifle home a goal inside 2 minutes. In fact we were 1-4 to 0-2 to the good inside the opening 12 minutes and led for most of the half until we conceded a goal from a dubious penalty to allow Ballygunner back into the contest.

It could have been worse but for an excellent save from Podge Kennedy as the half drew to a close.

It was 1-7 to 1-6 at the break in favor of the Waterford Champions with alarm bells ringing at the lack of scores and vital posession being won.

The second half got no better and Ballygunner kept the scoreboard ticking over as our lads just couldnt match the hunger of their opponents.

It certainly wasnt for the lack of trying but try as they might they just couldnt get their game going and when a Pauric Mahoney free went all the way to the net we knew our game was up.

Shane Dowling fired a 20 metre free past a half dozen Waterford defenders to narrow the gap and Conor Houlihan hit the butt of the upright following great work from Ronan Lynch.

However it was not to be for the lads who were simply second best to a very determined Ballygunner.

A huge thank you to all who made this journey a great one.

Massive credit to the players and management who gave us great days again this year with the highlight being the retention of our County Title

A big shout out too to the big support we had in Thurles on Sunday who were excellent all year too.

For the record the team was Podge Kennedy, Jerome Boylan, Mike Casey, Cathal King, Ronan Lynch(0-2), Will O Donoghue, Tommy Grimes, Alan Dempsey(0-1), Gordon Brown, David Dempsey(0-1), Shane Dowling(1-4, 1-3f), Conor Boylan, Adrian Breen, Kevin Downes(1-0), Peter Casey. Subs used: Conor Houlihan, Michael Foley.

Final Score: Ballygunner 2-14 Na Piarsaigh 2-8
