Kildimo/Pallaskenry GAA Club Notes

June 18, 2018

MUNSTER POC FADA: Munster champion! Our very own John Chawke is the Munster Poc Fada champion for 2018! John was disappointed to come second in this competition last year, and came back with real determination this year to secure the Tommy Quaid Memorial Cup. It's a fantastic achievement for John, who has put a huge amount of work in to get to where he is and now with Limerick and Munster titles in the bag, he will face into the All-Ireland competition in the Cooley Mountains. Congratulations once again to John, all at the club are very proud of his achievements!

JUNIOR B HURLING COUNTY LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL: Kildimo/Pallaskenry 2-14 Doon 4-10. There was disappointment for our Junior B Hurlers who lost to Doon by just a couple of points in the County League Semi-Final. It was an entertaining game throughout, and after Doon had built up a big lead with the wind in the first half; we mounted a great comeback but it just wasn't quite enough. Doon had much more match practice coming from the East division than we had in the City, and they came out of the blocks much quicker, hitting the first three points of the game. Stephen McKeogh got our first point on the board, but Doon continued their excellent start by hitting 2-2 after that score. Brendan O'Shea had flashed a goal opportunity just wide of the post but while we were doing a lot of hurling, we were struggling to make it count against the wind and Doon were landing scores from distance and led by 10 points. Another point from Stephen McKeogh settled us a bit, before Doon hit a monster free from inside their own half. Stephen then set up Brian Howard for a good score from play before he then hit a free after Brendan O'Shea was fouled, with Brendan causing a lot of problems for his marker. But as we were coming back into the game, Doon hit us with a sucker punch before the break as they hit their third goal, and followed it up with a point. Evan Considine was to get the last score of the half, but it left us with a lot to do in the second half as we went in on a scoreline of Kildimo/Pallaskenry 0-5 Doon 3-7.

But we produced a superb second-half comeback to make a real contest of the game. We started very brightly in the second period, with Stephen McKeogh and Brendan O'Shea particularly lively in the full-forward line. Adrian Garvey was getting on a lot of ball in midfield and there was strong defending from the likes of James Pomeroy, Kieran O'Brien and Akash Chaudri in defence. Stephen McKeogh go the first score of the second half with a point from play, and this was followed up with a good score from distance by Adrian Garvey. After Mossy Sheehan went marauding up the field, he was fouled and Stephen McKeogh converted the free. Doon did rally and hit a score, but then there was a period of no scores for both sides; disappointingly we hit a couple of wides when we felt like we were on top.

But Adrian Garvey showed some great leadership, and took the game by the scruff of the neck. A powerful run through the middle ended with him being fouled and Stephen McKeogh struck over the free. Adrian then hit two points in a row to narrow the gap to just six points; one after some great play by Kieran O'Brien and one after being found by Stephen McKeogh. But just as it looked as if we were going to close the gap completely, Doon hit us for a fourth goal, with not a whole lot of time left on the clock. But again, we dug deep and fought to the bitter end, and got in touch. First Stephen McKeogh got out in front of his man and fed Chris McMahon coming through the middle and Chris made no mistake from close range, burying the ball past the keeper. Then a low ball into the corner saw Stephen get the ball in hand, turn his marked and kick low into the bottom corner. Suddenly, there was just three points between the teams again! Doon responded with a score to give them a bit of a buffer, but Chris McMahon then hit a point from play before Mikey Dillon picked out Stephen McKeogh and Stephen swung over another score; he would finish with 1-4 from play. But after Doon got a score to put the gap out to three, we knew that we would need a goal as entered additional time. We were awarded a penalty, and Stephen McKeogh stood over the ball but was denied by a fantastic save from the goalkeeper. Sadly, it was not to be and Kieran O'Brien finished things with a late point.

It was a really good performance in the second half; again, we showed great heart and fighting spirit and with a few injured players and Leaving Cert students to return, it gives us great hope ahead of Championship. Best of luck to the team and management ahead of Championship, we know they can make a real impact!

LIMERICK MINOR HURLERS: Massive congratulations must go to James Mason and the Limerick minor hurlers who finished very strongly against the Clare minor hurlers to win the game and book their place in the Munster final in two weeks time. Best of luck to James and the rest of the team in the Munster final!

CELTIC CHALLENGE: There was further representation on the intercounty stage at the weekend as Ciarán Downes, Paudi Hartigan and Jai Chaudri played in the Celtic Challenge quarter-final for Limerick Sarsfields against Galway Tribesmen.
