Patrickswell GAA notes

June 18, 2018

SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell remained top of the All County Hurling League after a three-goal win over Na Piarsaigh. The opening ten minutes were delicately balanced as both teams registered three points each. Tom O'Brien pushed the 'Well into the lead with a fine goal, but the Caherdavin side stayed in contention at 1-4 to 0-6 after fifteen minutes. The match swung decisively in Patrickswell's favour as our midfielders and forwards produced 1-5 without reply in a devastating ten-minute spell. At the interval, Gary Kirby's men were ahead by eight points at 2-11 to 0-9.

The second half produced an early fightback by Na Piarsaigh. At one stage, they produced seven consecutive points to slash their deficit to two points at 2-13 to 0-17. Patrickswell were forced to respond through successive points from Lar Considine, Mark Carmody and Peter Harty (0-2). Once again, the 'Well had opened a comfortable advantage at 2-17 to 0-17 after fifty minutes. David Woulfe made a telling impact when his late goal clinched the game. The final result was 3-20 to 0-20. The next scheduled All County Hurling League match is Tuesday June 19 at 7.30pm in Patrickswell versus Doon.

JUNIOR A HURLERS: Patrickswell maintained their 100% record in the City Championship after a tough win over Na Piarsaigh. While Na Piarsaigh struck the opening point of the match, Patrickswell took charge and roared into a 0-7 to 0-1 lead within ten minutes. Our opponents managed to halt the onslaught with a couple of points; however the 'Well notched another five straight points to lead by 0-12 to 0-5 by half-time.

Calvin Carroll's early second half goal opened up a ten point lead at 1-12 to 0-5 and the result seemed beyond doubt. Na Piarsaigh cancelled out the goal by notching three consecutive points, but Patrickswell tacked on two more points. After 45 minutes, the 'Well led handsomely by 1-14 to 0-8. The Light Blues stepped up the pressure and were rewarded with two goals and two points in a ten-minute burst. Patrickswell were under  pressure in the closing few minutes. Our lead had been eroded to three points at 1-16 to 2-10. The win appeared to be finally cemented with two insurance points; however Na Piarsaigh struck a third goal to set up a grandstand finale at 1-18 (21) to 3-10 (19). In the dying seconds, our opponents were pressing for the equalising goal. The 'Well broke forward and Jason Gillane ended their stubborn resistance with the last point of the match. The final result was a 1-19 to 3-10 triumph.

INTERCOUNTY HURLERS: Hard luck to the Limerick hurlers, who lost to a strong Clare team in the Munster Championship. Best of luck to the team in the preliminary quarter-final. Congratulations to the Minor hurlers who beat Clare.
