County U21 Football Championship

Fr. Caseys 0-10 Oola 0-12

Fr. Caseys U21 Footballers travelled to Martinstown last Friday night to take on Oola in round 2 of the County Championship. Having narrowly lost to Rathkeale in round 1, Fr. Caseys were anxious to get a result but it was not going to be easy against a strong Oola team backboned by County Footballer Josh Ryan. Oola kicked the opening two points before Paudie Smith did well under pressure to opened Fr. Caseys account with a point after 8 minutes. Oola replied with a brace of points to race into a three point lead. It was 21 minutes before the next score in the game and it came from the boot of Jamie O'Connor. Oola however cancelled out that point before the interval to take a 0-05 to 0-02 lead at the break. Fr. Caseys having played poorly were still very much in the game but a big second half performance was needed.

Fr. Caseys needed scores badly but it was Oola who extended their lead to 5 points with two early second half points. Fr. Caseys needed to reply quickly and up stepped Jonathon Lyons and Thomas Sexton with points to keep the Abbeyfeale men in the game. Oola replied with a brace of points and with 18 minutes remaining Fr. Caseys now had an uphill battle. A point from play by Jamie O'Connor soon followed by a pointed free from Cormac Roche reduced the margin to 3 points. With 10 minutes remaining Fr. Caseys had time on their side and when Martin Coughlan pointed and Cormac converted another free there was just a single point between the teams. With 5 minutes remaining Jonathon Lyons stepped up to kick the equaliser and now it looked like there would only be one winner. Unfortunately Oola rallied their troops and went to the opposite end of the field to kicked two points in quick succession to regain the lead. A fisted point from Martin Coughlan with 1 minute remaining left just a single point between the teams. With injury time to come Fr. Caseys were still hopefully of stealing a draw but Oola put closure on the game with a late pointed free to leave the final score Fr. Caseys 0-10, Oola 0-12.

After a spirited second half display it was a pity Fr. Caseys did not hold on for a draw. Like the Rathkeale game this team showed spells of brilliance but they were equally as guilty of spells of poor shooting and marking. In both group games they have been competitive but both times they were on the wrong end of narrow defeats. They play their final group game next weekend vs Mungret and the permutations are easy, anything but a victory and their season is over. Hopefully by next weekend all the issues can be addressed and this highly talented team can start achieving their true potential.

National Club Draw

The yearly GAA National Club Draw has returned and Fr. Caseys GAA Club are currently selling tickets for this draw throughout the parish of Abbeyfeale. With all money raised being returned to our local club, this is a very important fundraiser and we would strongly encourage all club members and supporters to support this draw. Fr. Caseys GAA Club have been very busy in the past year upgrading the club facilities from the all-weather training pitch, new nets and dugouts to maintenance work on the complex and clubhouse. The top prize in the National Club is a Renault Dynamique, second prize is a €2,000 travel voucher. In total there are 20 fantastic prizes on offer, more details can be found at www.gaa.ie/nationalclubdraw. The cost of the tickets are €10
