Juniors in County Junior A Championship Final

For the second year running our Junior A team are in the County Final. On Saturday they had a comprehensive win over Carrigallen by 2-14 to 1-5. At half time, we were 0-6 to 0-1 ahead with points from Shane Murphy, Brian Leyden and Andrew Burns as well as two frees from James McWeeney and a 45 converted by Ryan Gavin. The score that sealed it in the second half was a great series of passes which ended with Anthony McTague hitting the net. Brian Leyden got a second goal. Sin mar a bhí. Foireann: Darren Maxwell, James Hamill, Kevin O'Connor, Adam Goldrick, Philip Murphy, Jack Cullen, Mark O'Reilly (0-1), Joe Murphy, Ryan Gavin (0-1), Andrew Burns (0-1), Anthony McTague (1-3), Brian Leyden (1-1), James McWeeney (0-6, 5f), Shane Murphy (0-1), Patrick McLoughlin. Sub; David McLoughlin for S Murphy.

Hurling Championship Semi-final disaster

What a difference a year makes! County Hurling Champions in 2015. Beaten by 5-14 to 0-3 by Cluainín Iomáint in the semi final in 2016. How can that be ? Well it isn't that difficult to explain. Last Year, Paddy O'Connor and his assistants; Kieran Maxwell and Gavin Brennan had 35 players to choose from on Co Final day. On Sunday morning, they had a bare fifteen and were indebted to those who did turn out. Otherwise, they would have to concede the game. Of that fifteen, just six had started in the Co Final last year. It could hardly be much worse than that. One can only sympathise with Paddy O'Connor and his small band of helpers who keep the hurling flag flying while others with their own agendas see fit to put theirs first. The team that did take the field and upheld the name of the club in 2016 were: Colm Brennan, Kevin Banks, Paul Earley, Colin Moran, Barry McWeeney, Michael Domican, Liam Ferguson, Fergal Earley, Kevin O'Connor, Luke Murphy, Brendan Byrne, Mark O'Reilly, Michael O'Dell, Niall McGovern, Cian McCaffrey.  Next year, it can only get better.

Oughteragh Ladies lose in League final

Hard luck to the Oughteragh Ladies as they were defeated 2-11 to 1-7 by a very strong Glencar/Manor in the Division 2 League Final on Sunday. At half-time, it looked like the opposition could run away with the game as we were down 2-8 to 0-3 but the ladies rallied massively in the second half and showed their true worth to make the scoreline a lot more respectable. The defence, as a whole, played phenomenally well throughout, whilst keeper Chloe Harvey made a few outstanding saves to aid our cause. It's hard to name names when so many players performed above themselves but two of our U16 girls, Maeve Hamill and Ciara McGoldrick, really stood out in what was only their second game at adult level and hopefully they will produce many similar performances for the club. It was also great to see Aoibhinn McGoldrick and Lisa Cull - two of this year's Leitrim U14 All-Ireland Championship winners - making their debuts alongside Abbi Sweeney. With such a young panel filled with a plethora of exceptional talents, the future is bright for our ladies team and many thanks to every one of them for all of their hard work and dedication throughout 2016. Team: Chloe Harvey, Lisa Maguire, Laura Bohan, Leanne McGrath, Maeve Hamill, Katie Duignan, Ciara McGoldrick (1-1), Eilish O'Dowd, Róisín McHugh (0-5), Aoife McCartin, Ciara O'Dowd, Ellen Wrynn, Leighanne Flynn (0-1), Tara Fitzpatrick, Emma McGovern. Subs Used: Aoibhinn McGoldrick, Julie Reynolds, Lisa Cull, Abbi Sweeney, Megan Cull.

Under 16 Girls Lose narrowly

Ballinamore SOH U16 girls lined out at home Sunday 16th October to play neighbours St Brigid's. Brigid's got off to a strong but we quickly worked our way back into the game with some great scores including 2 goals to lead the game at half time. A very strong second half saw the girls dominate possession for long spells and with minutes to go we were a point up. We conceded a goal in the dying minutes to loose by 2 points. A great performance however by our young team hard luck girls.
