Leitrim's footballers are on the lookout for a new manager as Shane Ward has decided to call it a day.

Last month's qualifier defeat at the hands of neighbours Sligo has brought the curtain down on the Donegal native's tenure.

The news will come as a disappointment to team captain Gary Reynolds after he had called on Ward and his backroom team to stay on to build on their work over these past couple of years.

In a statement, Leitrim GAA has thanked Ward and his selectors for their efforts:

"Leitrim Senior and Under 21 Team Manager Shane Ward has today informed the  Executive of the Leitrim County Board that he is stepping down from his role and in doing so, thanked his management team for their professionalism and dedication. He also thanked the clubs for their co-operation and the county players for excellence of their work under his management team.

"Leitrim GAA would like to thank Shane and his backroom team for their tireless dedication and commitment over the last two years and wish  them the very best in the future. The County Board Executive will be meeting in the next few days to put a process in place to select a new team manager."
