Meath got their Leinster U20 football championship campaign off to an impressive start last night as they saw off their neighbours Westmeath by 0-18 to 2-5 in Ashbourne.

After Jack Duncan had netted a goal just 18 seconds in for the visitors, the Royals took over with Jamie Murphy leading the way for them in the scoring stakes as they raced towards a 0-11 to 1-0 half-time lead.

Westmeath would respond after the turnaround and goaled again in the 48th minute via Tadhg Baker to cut the deficit to five, but the points of Cian Commons, Hughie Corcoran and Rian Stafford helped to see Meath, All-Ireland minor champions three years ago, comfortably over the line.

In Clonguish, Louth scored their second consecutive win of the competition by defeating Longford on a 3-14 to 2-12 scoreline.

Kieran McArdle grabbed two goals (one a penalty) for the Wee County in the first-half before Liam Flynn smashed in their third to see out the victory.

Laois also made it back-to back wins thanks to a 1-9 to 0-9 victory over Wexford in Enniscorthy, where Cathal Lee’s 15th minute goal ended up being the difference between the sides.

In Netwatch Cullen Park, Wicklow recorded an emphatic 3-11 to 0-7 win against Carlow that ensured their place in the quarter-finals, while Offaly edged holders Kildare by 0-8 to 1-4 at Faithful Fields where Marcus Dalton fisted over the winner for the home side on 59 minutes.
