The Laois GAA Strategy and Action plan raised a few eyebrows when it was launched this week.

The review committee set up to look at the GAA in the county and which was chaired by former GAA president Nickey Brennan has come up with a number of controversial proposals.

One of which is the formation of a new juvenile club in Portlaoise with Laois GAA being urged to do so this year. The new club would be based in the Knockmay or Mountmellick side of the town.

A population boom is predicted in the town over the coming years and the committee feel that Laois GAA would be best served with a new club in Portlaoise.

Another area focused on is the struggle of some rural clubs to field at both juvenile and adult level, with it being suggested that up to ten clubs should amalgamate or face going out of existence.

A full time Coaching and Games Manager should also be appointed within the county to oversee all aspects of Gaelic Games and help take the burden off GDA's in the county.
