Henry Shefflin has recalled having to talk TJ Reid out of quitting inter-county hurling three years ago.

Reid, who is favourite to be named Hurler of the Year after another brilliant season in the Kilkenny colours, was on the verge of walking away from Brian Cody's squad after being omitted from the team for the 2012 All-Ireland quarter-final against Limerick. But after speaking to his famous Ballyhale club-mate, Reid decided to remain on the panel and went on to play a starring role as a sub against the Treaty County.

"He was unequivocal. He'd hurled his last game for Kilkenny," Shefflin reveals in his autobiography, which will be officially launched in Kilkenny tonight.

"I said, 'What happens if we lose on Sunday and you've just pulled off the panel? It doesn't look good'."
