There was a mis-match at Dr Cullen Park this afternoon, where Kilkenny romped to a facile 3-21 to 0-9 second-round victory over Carlow.

As if the challenge in front of them wasn’t already sufficiently daunting, the hosts suffered a massive blow in the eighth minute when Michael Malone was shown a straight red card for a high tackle on Huw Lawlor.

The Cats already led by five points to no score by then, with Alan Murphy (two frees), goalkeeper Eoin Murphy (free), Ger Aylward and Bill Sheehan on target, and James Maher’s eleventh-minute major helped them canter into a 1-12 to 0-5 interval advantage.

Aylward added the Cats’ second major and it was 3-16 to 0-7 when Richie Hogan whipped the sliothar to the net early in the fourth quarter. Two wins out of two then for Brian Cody’s men and they’ve rarely had an easier day out than this.
